On a cold rainy night in Resort Ri Kynjai, Shillong :

Walking swiftly along the cobbled stone path was proving to be a task for Anu. The navy blue netted saree shimmering with sequins didn't just look like she had the universe wrapped around her (as Anuj had pointed out a million times this evening). When wet, it definitely felt as though she had the weight of the universe on her. Clenching her room keys tight, she made a mental note never to listen to Shayar Kapadia again-taking a stroll along the still lake on a dewy night only sounded great in poems not in practice; especially when the term dewy turns into heavy drizzle.

Anuj, walking a few paces behind had his mind elsewhere. Earlier this evening during their college mate's 20th wedding anniversary get-together, he had serenaded the couple by breaking out into an impromptu performance of "Mera Mann Kehne Laga". But of course Anu knew, as she sat there swaying her head to the lyrics, tapping her feet lightly and looking at him adoringly across the bonfire, that the lyrics were meant for her. As he sang:

"Tujhe apna bana loon
Tujhe tujh se chura loon
Tujhe khud mein chhupa loon, Sahiba!
Ik mujh pe karam ho
Tu hi mera sanam ho
Teri mujh pe nazar ho, Sahiba!"

...she had locked eyes with him... the rest of world melting away and it was just them, in that moment. Her cheeks growing red as each lyric came her way... she had finally turned away with that secret smile that they seemed to be giving each other everywhere they go these days. The entire evening among friends, they had barely found a chance to be near each other. Anu was strictly against their friends finding out about them so soon and so, this late night stroll along the lake was the only way Anuj could think of, to have his queen all to himself.

Anu stops at her door, relieved at first to have reached but then annoyed that the cold was making her hand shake so badly, she couldn't get the keys to fit in. Anuj, offers to help, puts the key in and they hear a loud click. Maybe the universe was conspiring to keep these souls together a little longer because the key had broken in half - one end inside the lock and the other end dangling in Anuj's hand. Anu stares at the broken key wondering what to do. She can't knock on Devika's door now, it is half past one. The party had ended three hours ago. The reception is too far off to walk towards; in this cold...suddenly Anuj's soft voice breaks through her ruminations. "Hum..hum mere kamre me chalthe hai aur reception ko call lagate hai wahan se", he says. Anu nods in agreement, mostly to get some reprieve from this weather.

Anuj walks into his room, grabs the first towel he can find and offers it to Anu. He takes the other one & moves closer to the fireplace. Anu follows suit but as she dries her hair, he can see her shaking slightly. In the dim glow of the fire, he can see the goose bumps on her neck. He picks up the landline to call the reception but the line is dead. Anuj looks around unsure of how to help Anu. All he can see are his shirts and a bathrobe. He decides to offer them anyway.
