It was the break of dawn and the city was barely awake. Few people were out and most of them were vendors who were preparing their stalls. In a neighborhood near an outdoor wonton shop, a door opened with a creaking sound and a white furry cat stepped out.
"Xiao Bai."
Jiang Yue Lou's tone was similar to that of a parent warning his child who was about to commit mischief."Come back here." He carried the furball and set him down on the table.
"Be a good cat okay" Jiang Yue Lou pinched the cat's furry cheeks.
"Stay here and I will bring you a reward." Chief Jiang gave the cat one last pat on the head before he left.
While he was locking the door, he remembered a certain tune. Yue Lou smiled and started to whistle.
"Oh, Chief Jiang seems to be in a good mood today," someone said from behind.
Jiang Yue Lou stopped whistling but his face beamed with joy.
"Of course! Today is a special day," he replied then turned around.
"Good morning Yue Lou." The doctor smiled.
"Mn." He tapped the doctor's shoulder. "Let's go."

Two horses were presented to them, one black and one white. Jiang Yue Lou approached the black horse but it averted his touch, shook its head then let out a loud neigh. The chief retracted his hand and then slowly stepped back.
"I'm sorry about that. He is a bit uncomfortable with strangers. Perhaps you would like to choose a different horse instead?" The owner asked.
"No need. I can take this one," said Chen Yu Zhi as he petted the horse.
The owner was surprised to see that the horse was well-behaved. He said lively, "Oh! Wonderful. This horse is strange sometimes."
He turned to Jiang Yue Lou, " Well then. I'll leave these two in your care. Have a good day." then he left.
Jiang Yue Lou pulled the rein of the white horse and walked over to Chen Yu Zhi.
"Doctor Chen is amazing. You were able to tame the untamable."
Chen Yu Zhi replied with a smile, "It's because I have encountered someone similar before."
The chief got onto his horse.
"Oh? Who could this-" his words were cut off. "Hold on. Are you pertaining to me?"
On the other side, the doctor also got onto his horse.
"Am I wrong Chief Jiang?"
Chen Yu Zhi gently squeezed the middle of the horse's ribcage with the calves of his legs and then the horse started to walk.
Jiang Yue Lou followed suit using the same signals. He took his time to catch up with the doctor and kept silent while he watched Yu Zhi from behind. The sun's rays peeked through the trees and showered their path with warm light. The birds flew from above and chirped melodiously.
"..Lou. Jiang Yue Lou?"
The serene voice shook the chief from his daydreaming.
"Hm? Did you say something?"
They were now riding side by side and when the chief turned his head to the side, he had a clear view of Chen Yu Zhi's face that was basked in the warm sun ray. It was a soothing image to behold and he wanted to capture it forever.
Yu Zhi asked, "Is something on your mind?"
"Yes. That thing you said earlier is really bothering me," he answered jokingly. "Doctor Chen compared me to a horse and it has left me uncomfortable."

Chen Yu Zhi turned his head to look upfront to avoid the other man's judging eyes. "Uh. I did not mean it like that Chief Jiang."
"Oh? What did Doctor Chen mean then?" he raised one of his eyebrows.
Yu Zhi gave out a sigh. "I am sorry if I offended Chief Jiang with my words. I-"
"Ha-ha-ha. Look at you acting all serious. I was just teasing. Ha-ha-ha."
The laughter echoed in the doctor's ears. It was rare to see Jiang Yue Lou laugh his heart out like this. It was a good sign.
They continued to wander into the woods, at times they talked but mostly they just kept quiet and enjoyed each other's company.

When they passed the woods, they arrived at a river. After hours of strolling, they decided to take a break.
Chief Jiang got off his horse and guided it towards the riverbank.
Chen Yu Zhi on the other hand was having a bit of a problem. The horse was being stubborn and did not want to move forward. Yu Zhi got off his horse and gently tugged the rein to urge it forward. Finally, it moved.
"Yu Zhi, do you need any help?" he shouted from a distance.
"No, it's alright," he replied. Yu Zhi led his horse towards the water for a drink. The doctor squatted down and splashed water on his face.
"Why did you have to insist on choosing this horse. We could have gotten a better one. He's unstable." Jiang Yue Lou said.
He raised his head with water still dripping from his face. "Yue Lou, don't speak like that. Just because he acts out sometimes doesn't mean he deserves to be abandoned." He stood up, looked at Jiang Yue Lou, and added, "Don't you think so Chief Jiang?"
His words hit something inside the chief's heart which left him unable to answer back.
Silence fell between the two with the murmuring river in the background.

For whatever unknown reason, the black horse neighed and reared. Its sudden action caused Chen Yu Zhi to move backward but he lost his footing on the rock. Immediately, the chief grabbed Chen Yu Zhi's wrist, but alas gravity is just too strong.
