Bucky looked around the room, wishing he was anywhere but there

Bucky looked around the room, wishing he was anywhere but there. Tony had thrown yet another extravagant party and said that the team's attendance was mandatory. Bucky hadn't wanted to go, but Natasha insisted they show up for a few minutes, promising that she'd make it worth his while. But the longer he was there, the more he wanted to go running back to his room.

It didn't make it any better that you were there, too. He knew you would be there. You always loved going to Tony's parties, dragging him out to the dance floor, making him feel like he was young again. Then you'd pull him to the bar, tell him stories that had him laughing so hard he remembered what it felt like to be happy again.

Nowadays, you didn't leave your room much. At least, that's what Steve told him. You restructured your schedule, doing your training late at night when there weren't others about. You ordered food more often, going out to the kitchen less. Most of the team only ever saw you when you were on a mission with them. And Bucky knew he was the only person to blame for it.

He was an idiot, and he hated that it took losing you to realize that. Because, as he watched you spin around the dance floor, wrapped up in Loki's arms, he never felt more stupid.

"Is everything okay, Buck?" Natasha asked, reaching out, rubbing his arm. He wanted nothing more than to jerk away, to tell her to leave him alone. "You don't look good."

He wanted to scream, to yell, to tell her to fuck off. But, all he could say was, "No, I'm not good. I think I'm going to turn in for the night."

"Oh. Do you want me to come with you?"

"No," he said, shaking his head. "And...And I think it'd be best if we just break up. This was all a mistake."

And before she could say anything else, he was already gone.
