Chapter Song: Another Brick In The Wall, Pink Floyd
As we moved forward again, the tension between Curtis and I had lessened greatly. It wasn't hard to actually make eye contact anymore, there were still some moments when I would look at him and see Edgar, but I refused to let that haunt me. We moved into a new car after Nam messed around with the wires, and this one was just as strange as the last. The chill of it shock me, because I had gotten used to the couple warm cars we had gone through. Various skinned and gutted animals hung from hooks overhead, and other blocks of packaged meat were sitting chilled on shelves. I dodged a swinging meat popsicle as we walked to the next car.
"Curtis, my friend, do you think that we might dispense with the restraints for this next section?" Mason asked, looking back at Curtis and I.
"I'm not your friend, and why would I?" Curtis said, refusing to look her in the eye.
"Uh, for the...for the sake of the young? Education?" Mason stammered, stopping in front of the next gate as Nam ran over to it. At the word "young", I chose to slip my knife into my jacket pocket. Didn't want any of the front section bastards to grab it. Yona didn't even have to ask for her and her dads drug this time, Curtis handed it over as soon as the gates started to open.
Our ears were greeted with the sounds of high pitched squealing and cheers of excitement. I flinched at the loud noise and the overall gaudy colorfulness of the school car. All the children were wearing crudely made paper masks and screaming at each other. At the podium in front of the many desks, a blonde woman stood and called for the children to be quiet. Thankfully the ear splitting noise died down.
"Good morning, children. I'm pleased to present guests from the tail section." Mason said, turning back to us. We had given her a cloth to wear over her hands so the chains wouldn't show. I followed behind Curtis and saw that a little boy had grabbed at Curtis' dirty coat sleeve in wonder. I batted away the small boys hand and placed mine back into Curtis', it felt comforting and familiar to be holding his hand again.
"Yes, and what do we say to tail section guests, children?" The overly cheery blonde teacher said.
"Good morning, tails section guests!" All of the kids shouted in unison. It was slightly unnerving.
Tanya and Andrew had dashed forward to two children and took off their masks gently. Both of the little boys had a resemblance to Andy and Timmy, however it wasn't them. Tanya and Andrew had gotten out their drawing of their kids and showed them to everyone.
"This little boy, his name is Timmy." Tanya said, sniffling a bit as she displayed Timmy's picture.
"This is my son. Please take a good look at the picture." Andrew had gotten his drawing out one handedly.
"I saw them!" The boy who grabbed at Curtis when we first entered the car spoke up, raising his hand.
"When?" Tanya said at the exact same time Andrew said "Where?"
"Came through there, went through there." The boy said, pointing to the back and front of the train. I rolled my eyes at the obviousness of his statement. There were no other paths to get around the train.
"Is that all, boy?" Mason asked the small child.
"Yes." He said and smiled at us. It would have been cute if I didn't despise front section children so much.
"Were they crying?" Tanya asked, worried for her son and Andrew's.
"No, but they looked like they wanted to." The boy said. I resisted the urge to scoff, front section kids had no empathy whatsoever. As if to further prove my point, a little blonde girl stood up on her chair and raised her hand.
