Chapter Song: Beast, Nico Vega (highly recommended to look up and listen.)
I screamed in pain as Curtis pulled me to the floor behind one of the overturned desks. Grey had Tanya, who was trying to reach for Andrew's corpse. The teacher was still firing on us and it didn't seem like it would end.
"Curtis, press here!" I yelled, pointing to my wounded shoulder. He hesitated for a second, but complied. He placed his palm over the bullet wound and pressed hard. I screamed, but told him not to move his hand. I told him to get a roll of bandages out of my pack and make a pad, then get a strip of bandages to tie it in place.
After the quick wound dressing, I pulled out my knife and tossed it over to Grey. Curtis gave him a quick nod, and when there was a moment of cease fire, Grey quickly stood up and flung the knife at the teacher.
There was a quiet choking sound, then a thump as she hit the floor dead. I rested my head against the desk and tried to control my breathing. The pain was excruciating, but the adrenaline made it tolerable. I stood up and used the overturned desk as leverage, blood was still gushing out of my shoulder, but at a slower pace. It was more of a trickle than a river. I pressed my other palm into my shoulder and groaned against the pain.
Mason was on the floor and scrambled for the fallen gun, she aimed it at Curtis and fired. But, thankfully her aim was terrible and she missed. Curtis grabbed her by the front of her shirt but she kept repeating,
"It wasn't me!"
A horn blew from the screen overhead, and a fuzzy video started playing. I stepped forward next to Curtis and gasped when the video showed Franco the elder dragging Gilliam into the frame. He put Gilliam on his knees and didn't hesitate to aim a gun at his head and pull the trigger. Tanya screamed and Grey turned away and covered his face. Curtis had a look of horror permanently etched onto his face. Gilliam was like a father to us all, he was our leader and the thing that kept us all going.
I couldn't look away from the blank stare that Franco was giving to the camera. His eyes were dead pits and held no emotion whatsoever. I tore my gaze away from the screen and noticed that Grey had tears streaming down his face. After a few moments of dead silence, Tanya finally spoke up.
"Curtis." She said, attempting to get his attention. He didn't respond, he just continued to stare at the screen in horror. "Curtis!" She said louder and turned him to face her. She slapped him once to get his attention, it seemed to do the trick. "You have to lead us." She sobbed, fresh tears falling onto her cheeks. Curtis took a shuddering breath and nodded.
I bent down and picked up the fallen gun and handed it to him. He looked back and forth between Mason and I, then took the gun from me. I gave a nod of approval and he stepped towards Mason.
"Curtis, my friend, we understand each other. Listen to my words, it's wasn't me!" She exclaimed and steepled her hands together like in prayer. Curtis said nothing, only aimed the gun at her head and pulled the trigger. Some blood got onto his face, but he made no move to wipe it off. After a couple breaths, he walked over to the table by the teacher's dead body and unloaded the clip from the gun. He picked up a spare one and reloaded it.
"We go forward." He said, his voice monotone. I looked around at the carnage surrounding us, three dead bodies and a multitude of bullet holes everywhere. What shocked me the most was, even though I was sad about Andrew, I wasn't disgusted or afraid by it. Tanya was crying quietly, and Yona was whimpering. But, I wasn't effected by any of it. The only thing I was wincing about was my shoulder wound. Our group was getting smaller, but we were almost to the front and that's all that mattered at the moment.
I looked down at Mason's still corpse and smiled slightly. An eye for an eye. Gilliam was dead, and so was she. Andrew was dead, and so was the teacher. Edgar was dead, and Franco the younger was as well. I wanted nothing more than to be done with this revolt. To find my father, settle down with Curtis, and live freely in this God forsaken place.
I picked up an extra clip of bullets that was on the floor and followed Curtis. I stuffed the clip into my back pocket and retrieved my knife from the teacher's throat. My wound was hurting less, but if I didn't get the bullet out it would become infected.
"Curtis, we have to stop for a second." I said and gasped in pain when a hot flare ripped through my shoulder. He looked at my shoulder and nodded. I cut off the bandages and pulled my shirt open to the side.
"Yona, come here." I called to the raven haired girl. She hesitantly walked over and stood by my side. I sat on the table and laid back, keeping my body relaxed. "I need you to dig the bullet out."
"Why!?" She asked in shock, fear crossing her youthful face.
"You have the smallest fingers here, and I need the bullet out so it doesn't get infected. Please." I said, and waited for her to make her choice. After a moment of hesitation, she finally nodded and rolled the sleeve of her shirt up. I instructed her were to dig the bullet out and she reluctantly inserted her slim index finger and thumb into the bullet hole.
Curtis held my other hand as I groaned in pain. It felt like someone was sticking a hot poker into my shoulder and twisting. She finally got ahold of the bullet and pulled it out. She dropped onto the table and it landed with a soft plink. I told Curtis to get out a vial of antiseptic and clean bandages from my pack. I tipped the liquid from the vial into my wound and it stung horribly, but I ground my teeth together and wrapped my shoulder up nice and tight. I got up from the table and shrugged my pack back onto my shoulders.
"There, now we can move forward." I mumbled and started for the front of the train.
A/N: I feel kinda like George R. R. Martin by killing off so many characters. But, oh well! By the way, the chapter song is super awesome and really badass. Thanks for reading don't forget to vote and comment!
