"When will they come back. I've never been this far away from them this long, and they won't answer my texts. I just want to hug Katie again." Emily gasps through her shaking sobs.
"I know, I know. You have me, I will always be here for you. I've got you."
I really did know. My best friend... she... she got cancer 2 years ago. Her battle ended too soon. She's gone, but for me it's forever. Boom, flashback.
"She's showing great progress, she'll be fine," The nurse told us. I believed him. I knew she was strong. I knew she was going to be okay. She walked out of her room not 20 minutes later, dragging her iv behind her. "How do I look? Be honest" she said.
She had pale yellow skin, and a hospital gown. Matted hair and a gleam of sweat.
"You can really rock that 13 year old who just got out of the ICU look."
"Karrie, Karrie! are you good." Emily asked.
"OH yeah, I'm all good.
I'd done it again. I release the hand gripping My opposite hand and smile that everyone belives.
"OK, you had me worried there for a second, like I was saying, my mom said we can go see them next month but that's too long.
Just remember, nod and look sympathetic. Nod and sympathetic. My inner voice repeated.
So that's what I did.
