It's been 3 weeks since I last saw him. I'm only going through the motions and trying not to get myself shot while on calls. My boss keeps checking on me but I shut him out. It's embarrassing to talk about things with him... he's my superior.
Jake is still worried. He can see how little sleep I'm getting. I've stopped drinking myself to death so that counts for something... right? Jake actually took all of my alcohol last week so that's really the only reason. I'm just miserable at this point.
Bucky still texts me... Steve isn't doing well. He's shut himself off from the world so Bucky is basically running everything. I wish I could lock myself in my room and never see the light of day again but no. Jake would kill me. My boss would kill me. To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't been out on desk duty.
We're on a call now. I've been tasked with interviewing the witness, something I seriously don't want to do. Sighing, I walk into the house and an officer directs me to the kitchen which is where I'm assuming the family is. Is that... is that Tony?
"Tony?" I ask once I walk in.
"Bella? You're a fed?" He asks.
"Uh yea. What happened? Are you ok?" I ask.
"N-no... someone took Morgan." Shit.
"Bella?" I turn and see Pepper.
"Hi." I hug her. They must be going through so much.
"Didn't know you were a fed..." She says.
"Yea... um tell me what happened?" I ask, taking out my little notebook. They start going through what happened. They were sleeping, someone broke through the alarm system, and grabbed Morgan in the middle of the night. I ask them all of the standard questions; when did they notice she was gone, do they have any enemies, so on so forth. By the end, Tony is pissed off which is completely understandable. Pepper is in tears and I try my best to console her. I've only met these people once but they're so sweet, I don't understand who would want to take Morgan.
I finish asking my questions and tell them I'll be right back, that I have to go update my partner. As I'm walking outside, my phone rings.
"Payne." I answer without looking at the caller ID.
'It's Bucky. Steve's been shot.'
"Excuse me?" I ask, not sure if I heard him right.
'He's been shot... we're at St Augustine Hospital.' He rushes. My brain finally catches up and it hits me like a brick.
"I'll be there soon." I hang up and run to Jake.
"I have to go. I need the keys." He gives me a confused look.
