* REMUS' POV *

«»

Unlike the other two boys, Remus Lupin didn't receive his invitation to Hogwarts by owl. An old man with a long beard and maroon coloured robes apparated in front of the Lupins house on the morning of Remus' 11th birthday. Lyall Lupin looked to his wife in worry, did Dumbledore know something about their son's condition?
He opened the door and after exchanging pleasantries he was sat down in their kitchen being served tea from Lyall's wife, Hope.
"It's good to see you hear Dumbledore but I must ask what is the purpose of this visit?" Lyall asked the older wizard.
"I think it would be more appropriate if your son received this letter in person so we can talk over all options," Dumbledore replied as he pulled out a wax-sealed letter from his robes.
Remus gently took the letter from the older man, there was no way this could be what he thought it was. After Fenrir Greyback had bitten him, he was sure any future ambitions and plans were hopeless. No one in their right mind would let a werewolf come into the school.
Remus carefully peeled open the letter and saw the invitation to learn magic at Hogwarts. He couldn't believe it. He was going to learn magic! This was by far the best present he'd received today.
"You didn't have to come down all this way to deliver the letter to him Dumbledore," Lyall began.
"I know about your son's condition and I can understand how you may be hesitant to let your son attend. But I assure you, I can place many security measures to make sure Remus and the other students are well protected."
It didn't surprise Lyall that Dumbledore knew about it. That man didn't miss anything.
"I still don't know Dumbledore, there's too much of a risk. If he's found out then it could change his whole future. You'd be placing all the students in danger," Lyall argued.
Remus pretended like these words didn't sting. All he'd ever wanted was to go to Hogwarts, if he couldn't go then what would he do for the rest of his life? He couldn't live at his parent's house for the rest of his life, he had to get out there and try things if he wanted to get anywhere. Dumbledore's eyes twinkled down at the young boy and Remus felt a spark of hope ignite within him. If anyone could convince his parents to attend Hogwarts it'd be Dumbledore.
After talking and thinking about many different possible scenarios, Lyall and Hope finally caved and said once they've seen these 'security measures' for themselves and deemed it safe enough for him then he would be allowed to go to Hogwarts.
Dumbledore almost seemed as happy as Lupin was.
"Very well, we'll start to work on it right away. In the meantime, I hope you have a very good birthday Remus. I shall see you at Hogwarts on the1st of September," Dumbledore announced.
Remus was almost tempted to give the headmaster a hug.
"Thank you very much, sir," Remus gushed.
"Everyone with magical blood in their veins should be given a chance to learn magic, no matter what kind of blood or affliction they may have."
With that wise remark hanging over the air, Dumbledore thanked the Lupins for their hospitality and was gone with a loud crack.
"Well, I guess that means we need to take a trip to Diagon Alley," Lyall said looking down at the list.
Within a few minutes, the family was ready to go. It was better to get all the school supplies as soon as possible, otherwise, all the students cram to get their stuff right before school starts and all the second-hand books and other things would be sold out before the Lupin's got there.
While they were waiting in line to get their books, Remus' mother, Hope struck up a conversation with two muggle parents that were behind them in the line. Being a muggle herself, Hope was always looking for other Muggle parents or partners to talk to about this whole new world she'd been opened up to when she married Lyall. Behind the two muggle parents was a girl around Remus' age with bright red hair and freckles. Her skin looked smooth and soft while her eyes were a brilliant green colour. She smiled at Remus.
"Hi, I'm Lily," she introduced, holding her hand out for him to shake.
He returned the smile and shook her hand.
"Remus," he replied, "Is this your first time in Diagon Alley?"
"No, I've been here before with a friend. He was the one who told me I was a witch, he took me here with his mother once," she explained.
"That's cool, have you tried the ice cream from Florean's Fortescue shop?"
"No but I've heard a lot of people say that the ice cream there is quite good, the flavours seem quite odd though."
"They sound odd but once you try it they're actually amazing. You should get one while you're here," Remus recommended.
"I'll drag Mum and Dad there later and see what they think of it," Lily replied with a smile.
The Lupins were called next to get the books Remus would need for his first year and Hope said goodbye to Lily's parents as they went up to the counter. As Lyall asked for the second-hand books Remus hoped that Lily wasn't listening. Although she didn't seem like the kind of person to judge how much money someone had, he still didn't like it to be public news.
As they walked through Diagon Alley his mind wandered to what house the girl might be in. He quickly ruled out Slytherin for obvious reasons, maybe Ravenclaw? She seemed smart enough. Maybe Hufflepuff although the mustard yellow of their robes wouldn't look good with her red hair. He shook that thought out of his head, was he suddenly the fashion police? He began to think about what house he'd be put into. He wouldn't mind being in Ravenclaw but didn't know if he'd be smart enough to be in that house. He wouldn't mind being in Gryffindor either like his father, hopefully, he was brave enough to be sorted into that house. He didn't know too much about Hufflepuff, only that the people in that house were described as loyal and trusting. Remus hadn't met too many other people his age because of his 'condition' so he didn't have any friends. He didn't know if he was loyal or not so he ruled Hufflepuff out of the equation. The last house is what made him nervous, Slytherin. That was the house that was known for having many dark wizards, he didn't like to think he had any of those traits but he was scared that the sorting hat would see the werewolf part of him and put him in Slytherin.
He gulped and pushed that thought deep down. He wouldn't dwell on that thought, surely if he was put in Slytherin he could talk to Dumbledore about it. He wasn't looking forward to meeting the Slytherin's. He'd never heard of one wizard from Slytherin who didn't turn out absolutely evil. If they weren't a death eater then they never went to do anything accomplishing.
If there was anything Remus Lupin wanted to do in his life was to accomplish something great, he wanted to prove everyone wrong. He wanted to prove to himself that even werewolves could do something great.
