~ JAMES' POV ~

«»

After losing 80 house points and gaining a lifetime's worth of detentions we barely had time to do anything else. After dinner, we'd go straight to detention where she'd assign us different places to serve detention or make us work altogether on a big project like cleaning the trophy room. I thought it was a bit dramatic as the boys were fine and we hadn't even done any damage to them. It would've been much worse if we had jinxed or hexed them. Frank Longbottom was crying with laughter once we told him what had happened. Billius also cracked up, instead of spending the rest of our night working on our homework that we had piling up, we listened to Frank and Billius telling us stories and pranks they had pulled in the previous years.
Even Remus put down his book he was trying to read and listened in on the stories they were telling. Lily and the other girls didn't approve of our loud laughter and moved upstairs to their dormitory to study.
That night in the dormitory I laid awake, staring at the ceiling.
"So, I've been thinking," I said.
"That's never good," Sirius commented from his bed.
"With Billius being a Prefect and all, he can't keep doing the pranks and stuff and with Frank wanting to become a Prefect, someone needs to step up and fill in their shoes," I began.
Sirius sat up, hair flopped into his face.
"I like the way you think," he replied excitedly.
"Not, if you guys want to be in detention for the rest of your lives and possibly be expelled then you can go right ahead," Remus said putting his book down, "But I'd prefer to actually spend time out of detention at Hogwarts."
"You only get detention if you get caught," I scoffed.
"And there's a high chance that you'll get caught, Filch knows this place like the back of his hand."
"We won't get caught with this," I said jumping out of my bed.
I dug through my trunk, throwing stuff around my bed until I grabbed ahold of a silver cloak. I threw it around my shoulders and soon enough my head was floating in the dormitory.
"NO WAY!" Sirius yelled as he bounded over.
He ran his hands through the silky invisible material. Even Remus looked amazed as he came over.
"Where on earth did you get one?" He breathed.
"It was my dad's, it's been passed down through my family for ages," I replied.
The bathroom door opened and Peter screamed and dropped his things, spilling shampoo and water all over the floor. I looked over to see what he was scared of before I realised he was looking at my floating head in the middle of the room.
We heard footsteps thundering up the stairs and I quickly took off the cloak and shoved it deep in my trunk just before the door burst open and a crowd of Gryffindors were at our door.
"Is everyone okay? What happened?" Billius asked, brandishing his wand and searching the room.
"Sorry, it was nothing, Peter just uh- saw a rat," I lied.
Billius dropped his arm and chuckled.
"Rats can't hurt you, Pete, do you want me to kill it?" Billius asked looking around our messy dormitory to see if he could spot the rat.
"I think Pete must've scared it off with that scream," Frank joked from the doorway, "Alright you lot, everything's fine, back to your dorms."
He herded the crowd down the stairs and I could hear them whispering and laughing at Peter's scream.
"Alright, will you guys be okay?" Billius asked.
"Yeah no, we'll be fine, won't we Pete?" Sirius replied.
Peter was pale-faced and still frozen but managed to nod. Billius chuckled and said goodnight before closing our door behind him. There was a moment of silence before Sirius burst into laughter, I followed soon after at the frozen look on Peter's face. Sirius and I were on the floor, howling with laughter, tears leaked from my eyes and my sides hurt from laughter. I took gasping breaths trying to calm myself down and during our laughing fit, Peter had managed to sit down and try to process what he had just seen.
Once we'd all recovered, I pulled my cloak out from my trunk and put it on again, showing Peter what it was.
"You didn't think to give a guy any warning?" Peter spluttered.
"We didn't know you'd come out of the shower right that second," Sirius replied.
I gave him a sheepish look and apologised for giving him a heart attack.
"So, back to the original topic, Remus, you up for some late-night marauding?" I asked, "We can't take up the mantle without you."
Remus caved in a nodded.
"Great we've alright got our first plan in motion," Sirius said springing up and sitting on Remus' bed.
"Whoa, hang on, don't you think we should finish our first lot of detention before doing it?" Peter asked.
"Well, as we were saying before you walked in, they can't give us detention if they don't know who it is, that's why we'll have the invisibility cloak to hide us. They can't prove anything if no one sees us," I reasoned.
Peter nodded, I could tell he was nervous but sometimes he just needs a little push to get fully into ideas.
"We hardly know any spells, we haven't been here. What do you guys suggest we do?" Remus asked.
"Well, we've got to build our way up the scale. We'll do something funny but completely harmless at first and then work on other stuff once we learn more," I explained.
"So, I've heard of these plants called Puffapods, and they bloom instantly when they come into contact with any hard solid objects. So, what do we do? We'll place them under all the house tables and when people sit down. BOOM! Flowers galore!" Sirius explained quickly.
Our brains were very much alike, if a pair of strangers met us they'd probably think we were step-brothers or something by the way we acted around each other.
"See it's harmless, just a fun prank to start everyone's morning," I added.
"Fine, how do you even know they have Puffapod seeds in the greenhouses?" Peter asked.
"We went and checked it out, they have a lot of other interesting stuff in there too," Sirius added with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"3 days, that's when we'll do it, alright?"
Everyone nodded and I grinned. This was only just the beginning of our marauding career.
