:   PETER'S POV   :

«»

WHOMP!
I sat straight up in my bed as a soft surface was slammed into my face. It took a few seconds to blink the sleep from my eyes and I could hear the laughs of James and Sirius. I groaned and flopped back down onto my pillow.
"Go away," I mumbled into my pillow.
"C'mon, we're going down to breakfast, get up!" James whined hitting me with his pillow again.
I grabbed the pillow and managed to pull it from his grasp and throw it across the room to Remus' bed. It landed on the empty sheets and I looked around the room to see if Remus was in the dormitory but he was nowhere to be found.
"Remus still isn't bad?" I questioned, frowning.
Remus hadn't come into the dorm last night after Transfiguration and we were all worried about him, we had tried to ask Professor McGonagall but she warned us not to be out of bed this late. We protested and said that we were looking for Remus but that ended with her yelled 'the only thing you're about to look at is Gryffindor losing 50 points'. That shut us up quickly and she escorted us back to the Gryffindor common room. Someone had said they had seen Remus walking through the castle with Dumbledore after our afternoon session.
That confused me, what was Remus doing with Professor Dumbledore? Had something bad happened in his family? Had someone been killed by death eaters?
"I didn't even hear him come in last night," Sirius added.
"Maybe we were all asleep when he came in and he's done at breakfast or something, if you'd hurry up Pete then maybe we'd get some answers," James joked.
I climbed out of bed, quickly pulling on the crinkled robes that I had carelessly thrown into my trunk last night when I was getting changed. I brushed a comb through my hair and tried to smooth out some of the crinkles in my robes as we walked down to breakfast.
We arrived at the Great Hall but as we scanned the Gryffindor table, Remus was nowhere to be found. I chewed on my lip, was he okay? I made up my mind to ask Professor Flitwick when we had charms in the morning to see if he knew anything.
"We'll ask Professor Flitwick to see if he knows anything in Charms," James said as if reading my mind.
Surprisingly, Lily Evans came and sat down next to me, shooting a glare at James. I didn't exactly know why Lily didn't like James, maybe it was because of that cream cake incident with Severus Snape. A greasy-haired git in our year level that was in Slytherin, he went on about blood-traitors and he was always glaring at us for no reason. Sirius was convinced that his face was just permanently stuck in that position.
I didn't understand how someone like Severus Snape would be friends with Lily, they were opposites in every way.
"Can we help you?" James asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Do you guys know where Remus is? He didn't come down to dinner last night and now he's not here either."
"Why do you care where he is?" James asked curiously.
"Because he's my friend."
"Are you sure? Just friends?" he teased.
"Get lost Potter," she hissed.
"We don't know where he is," I interjected before it'd blow up into a massive argument.
I hated confrontation and arguments, it made me want to curl up into a ball and squeeze my eyes shut like I used to do when I was younger and my parents were fighting.
Lily smiled at me and sent another glare at James before leaving to go sit down with some other Gryffindors like Marlene and Dorcas.
"I was having fun," James whined.
"You're never going to win her over by annoying the crap out of her," Sirius commented while buttering his toast.
"Win her over? I'm trying to get a rise out of her, it's funny," James lied.
Sirius made eye contact with me, we both knew he was full of bullshit but Sirius decided to drop it. We had more concerning things to worry about.
We left breakfast early to go to Charms and luckily for us, Flitwick was already inside, and so was Remus. He was sitting towards the front of the class talking with Professor Flitwick, he looked tired and worn out but otherwise, okay.
Sirius led the way to Remus' desk as Professor Flitwick turned around to continue writing stuff on the board.
"Remus! Where have you been?" Sirius asked stopping at his desk.
He did look worn out, what could've he been doing, and how some none of the teachers seemed to care or notice?
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"You weren't in the dorm last night or at breakfast this morning," I explained.
"Oh, I was uh- sick, Madam Pomfrey made me stay in the hospital wing overnight and I'd already had breakfast in there," he answered.
Sirius raised an eyebrow, I could tell he believed Remus' story just as much as when James' said he didn't have a thing for Lily.
"Should've told us mate, we thought you were kidnapped by Professor McGonagall or something," James joked.
Remus forced a laugh and as other Gryffindors came filing in, James pulled Sirius to the back of the class before he could say anything else about the matter.
"Glad you're feeling better Remus," I quickly said before scrambling back into a seat next to the two other boys.
The lesson went on and Sirius wasn't even paying attention as Professor McGonagall tried to get us to turn a matchstick into a needle. He was glaring at the back of Remus' head and kept asking questions like 'where do you think he really went?' and 'why do you think he's lying to us?'. After the 50th time he asked James told him to shut up as Professor McGonagall came up to their table.
"Have you too been talking or learning for the past 40 minutes of this lesson?" she asked sternly.
"A bit of both Professor," James replied honestly.
McGonagall pursed her lips.
"Show me what've you've done so far."
James cleared his throat and performed the spell. To his credit, he did manage to make a needle, except it was made out of wood. McGonagall gave a sharp nod and turned expectantly to Sirius who distractedly waved his wand and said something beginning with 'm' although it definitely wasn't a spell I knew of. His matchstick ended up catching on fire and flying across the room, catching a box of tissues alight.
McGonagall quickly put it out and turned back to Sirius furiously.
"Have the spell mastered by the end of class or it'll be detention!" McGonagall yelled.
"Yes Professor," Sirius mumbled.
Everyone in the class was staring at him but didn't even so much as blush. He stared determinedly back at McGonagall not even cowering at the deadly look she was giving him.
I'd kill to have that kind of confidence someday, my mother says that the key to everything is confidence. If you don't believe that you can do something then how will you ever do it?
After Transfiguration, we walked across the grounds to get some fresh air before potions. Sirius continued to glance looks at Remus while we were walking but didn't say anything. We rounded the corner when Severus Snape came into view. He sneered at us and nudged the two cronies next to him. I think their names were something like Mulciber and Avery.
"I knew I could smell something rotten around the corner," Avery sneered.
"Maybe it's right under your nose, Snivellus could do with a shower," James retorted.
"Come on we don't want to associate ourselves with filthy blood traitors and squibs," Snape snapped, "Did you know your father has another family now? Married a nice witch and had a girl who is showing promising signs of magic, unlike his squib for a son!"
I pulled out my wand and Mulciber quickly did the same. This was only our second week at school, I hardly knew any spells let alone any hexes and curses. Apparently, Sirius Black didn't need those things to come up with a good idea.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" he shouted, pointing his wand at all three of them.
They all rose high into the air before Sirius made them flip upside down. He lifted them up and down with his wand making everything in their pockets and bags fall onto the ground. I let out a burst of laughter at the look on their faces. Even Remus let out a laugh.
"SIRIUS BLACK YOU PUT THOSE STUDENTS DOWN IMMEDIATELY!" McGonagall shrieked as she came running down the grassy slope, waving her wand and returning the Slytherin boys to the ground.
The Slytherins straightened themselves out and began scrambling to pick up their things from the floor.
"Crap," Sirius swore.
Professor McGonagall stopped in front of the four of us and gave us all a very stern look. Sirius put on his best smile, cleared his throat and with all seriousness said;
"Have you ever wondered what it's like to fly, Professor?"
