Chapter 3
After Cameron left in such a hurry, I went across the hall to talk to Jenna. I thought she might be able to tell me a little bit about Cameron. I didn't knock on her door, it didn't even occur to me. I just said "Hey, Jenna," as I turned the door knob. But as the door opened, I realized she was talking to a student. "Sorry, I didn't realize you were with a student. I'll come back." I said quickly as I started to leave.
"No, it's fine, Rebecca. Victoria was just about to leave." She stated, stopping me from exiting. "Victoria, you can email me if you have anymore questions." She called to the girl as she walked through the door.
"It's the first day and she already has questions?" I questioned.
"She just had some concerns with how I assign homework." She replied with a shrug.
"Right. Anyway, I was wondering if you could-"
"Let me guess, tell you about Cameron?" She asked cutting me off, with a smirk plastered on her face.
I'm sure the look on my face was priceless, considering how shocked I was.
"So, what would you like to know?" She questioned as I stood there dumbfounded.
"How'd you know that's why I came over?"
"Because I know you. And him."
"You and him talk like y'all are close."
"We are."
"Um, how?"
"He's a very reserved person. But keeping his feelings inside nearly caused him to lose his mind. I taught him a way to get those feelings out. He can be a very expressive writer when he trusts the person reading it."
"Something caused him to keep his guard up. What?"
"I only know because I gained his trust. Once you do, he will tell you."
I saw her smile as she looked down at her phone. Probably reading a text. I wondered who it was, but I didn't have to wonder long.
"Man, you must have pushed his buttons." She said looking up from her phone, amused.
"He texted you?!?" I asked extremely shocked.
"Yes." She said quickly as she typed a reply. "You know that girl that was in here earlier? That's Cam's sister." She added, looking at me again.
"Cam? Just how close are you two?" I questioned.
"Close enough." She shrugged as she gathered her things ready to head home. "Why don't you come over for dinner and I'll tell you just how close Cam and I are." She added as we both exited her classroom and I hurried to mine to gather my things.
"You're what?!" I gasped, nearly spitting out the bit of wine I had in my mouth, that night during dinner.
"Don't judge me." She said simply, not looking at me. "It just happened. I didn't plan it."
"Jenna, you're involved with a minor. A minor that is your student. You could get in a lot of trouble if anyone found out." I said very seriously.
"You think I don't know that?!?" She exclaimed, finally looking me in the eyes, fighting back tears. "Look, I love her." She started as she wiped her eyes. "And I really don't care what the risks are."
We sat in silence the rest of the way through dinner. I remember thinking how stupid she was for falling for a student and then immediately feeling guilty for judging my best friend. Especially when I felt a crush beginning to form on one of my own students.
"So, " I began as I helped her clear the table and we headed into the kitchen, "how long have you two...been together?" I asked, a little hesitant.
"Since around December of last year." She said smiling to herself, obviously remembering something that made her happy.
"So, do I get to meet this lucky girl?" I asked hoping to find out who it was.
"You already have. It's Victoria, Cam's sister. That's why Cam and I are so close. I practically spent the summer at their house."
"How did it happen? You falling for her?" I questioned, all of a sudden very interested.
"It's a really long story." She said looking at the clock on the wall.
"Hey, all we have to do is teach high school English tomorrow, it's not rocket science." I said jokingly as I grabbed a new bottle of wine and led the way to the couch.
"Okay, let's hear it." I said after filling up our glasses and getting comfy.
"I met her through, Cameron. He was in my class last year. I noticed something was going on with him and I decided to pay a home visit to meet his parents. That's when I met her." She said finishing very fast.
"That's it? That's all you're going to tell me?" I quizzed.
"I'll let him tell you the rest if he wants. It's really not up to me." She said so seriously it made me want to cringe. "So, what happened with you and Cam today?" She asked on a much lighter note.
By the time I finished telling her what happened with Cameron and she told me I almost caught her making out with her girlfriend, the wine bottle was completely empty and it was nearly 11:00 p.m.
"Oh crap, look at what time it is!" I almost yelled causing Jenna to jump.
"Relax, you can crash here tonight. Unless you want me to call Cam to come get you." She said the last part with a devilish smile that made me feel uneasy. I'm not sure if it was her smile that made me uneasy or if it was the fact that I would have liked Cameron to drive me home.
"No way! I'm way too tipsy to be around him right now!" I exclaimed, as I tried to stand up and failed.
"You're too tipsy to be around anyone!" She joked as she led me to the spare bedroom.
As I snuggled into bed I found myself thinking about Cameron, and what it was that he was hiding. I also wondered what it would be like if he was here with me. I'm quite sure I fell asleep that night with a smile on my face.
That's all for now, friends. Time to start dinner for my man. But don't worry. We still have a ways to go. ;)
