nat's pov:
Today is the day. The day I either lose or gain everything. I still haven't wrapped my mind around a lot of things. One, I'm time traveling today, and two, well, we all know what two is. I was putting on the special "time travel" suit that the smart ones designed when I heard a knock on the door. I opened it to see Steve.
"Hey." he said before I could open the door fully.
"Hey Steve." I replied as he walked in.
"What's going on?" I asked because he looked a little scrambled.
"What if we screw this up?" he asked.
"What do you mean?"
"What do I mean? We are traveling back in time to retrieve some brightly colored stones to save the universe...I'm freaking out a bit here."
However, Nat can read him and knows he doesn't panic when it comes to missions. Only "personal" stuff, which leads her to one conclusion.
"Is that really why you're freaking out, or is it because you're going back to a time and a place where Peggy exists? Because you know this team, they're the best. You're the best." I ask him in a heartfelt tone.
He stands there silent not knowing what to say because he knows she's right.
"I don't know what I would do if I saw her again Nat...and that's so unfair to say to you because well...because you're you...and we have the chance to have something really good here, so it's just not fair to you."
He says this while going to sit on the couch putting his head in his hands.
I follow him to the couch and sit next to him.
"Steve, hey, I understand...apart from what you may think I know what it's like to have "unfinished" and "unresolved" feelings for someone. Always wondering what would've happened if things had been different."
He looks up at me now.
"She's your first love. I get it. You don't have to be sorry when you talk about her."
authors pov:
He then grabs her hand.
"Thanks Nat."
"Anything for you." she smiles.
they sit in silence for only a few second before Nat stands up.
"I almost forgot." she says walking into the other room.
Steve stands up confused.
"I know you lost your old compass in the battle 5 years ago..." she trails off as she rummages through her drawers in her room.
She then walks out holding a small box.
"...so I thought I would get you a new one." She says handing him the box.
He opens it and a small grin appears on his face.
"Wow, thank you so much Nat it's almost exactly like my first one."
"I figured something to calm you down, some familiarity. I'm sorry that I couldn't replace the picture as well."
"No, don't worry about that. This is amazing thank you." he says pulling her into a hug.
As they pull away they both realize what they're wearing.
"We look pretty stupid." Steve says laughing.
"Yeah, yeah we do." Nat replies also laughing.
"Why do they always go with spandex?"
"Now that's the burning question isn't it." Nat says walking Steve to the door as they laugh.
"Thanks again Nat."
"You're welcome Steve." she smiles.
"I'll see you later."
Steve's pov:
I was walking back to my apartment staring at the new, but old, compass Nat had just given me. I lost mine in Wakanda, and didn't have many people in my corner since Sam and Bucky were gone, so I told Nat. She told me she couldn't find the same picture that I had put in my old one, but somehow that didn't matter. When I went to talk to Natasha I tried to tell her I didn't know what I would do if I saw Peggy again because Peggy felt safe. I tried to tell Nat that, but it felt unfair to her. However, when Nat handed me that compass it hit me. Peggy is my past. Nat. She's my present. She's my future. Our kid is our possible future. So as I made my way back inside I looked for a picture of her. I found a small pocket sized one of the two of us from when we were on the run. We weren't supposed to keep anything from that time, but it was the first time in 5 months we'd slept in a bed, so Sam took one of the two of us. It was the first time in a long time the 3 of us felt an inkling of safety. I just home everything goes well today. Because I don't like to show it, but I'm panicking just a little bit.
