Crash- Station 19/Marina

Rehab

A few days later Maya was moving out of the ICU to rehab, still at Grey Sloan but a different section.
"Buongiorno" Carina says when she notices Maya's awake. "You want to sit up?"
"Morning" Maya replies sleepily "ya"
"Ready for today?" Carina asks as she raises the bed then adjusts Maya's position
"I'm excited because it means I'm closer to getting out of here but I'm nervous because we don't know anyone at rehab"
"I'm nervous about that too but at least its still in the building. Amelia knows a lot of the staff there and she'll still be your doctor so we can still talk to her if we have any questions"

They had breakfast then Carina got in the bed with Maya so she could hold her. They were both nervous for today and enjoying being close.
"I can't wait until I get the halo off so we can actually cuddle" Maya says
"Me too"
"Can I get dressed?" Maya asked. "I haven't really thought about it but I'm moving today, I'd like to wear clothes for going through the hospital and meeting new people"
"I can definitely put pants on you, I'm not sure how to do a shirt with the vest part of the brace. We could ask Amelia or someone, the people at rehab probably have tricks, I'm sure they've had a lot of people in the halo brace."
"I can just wear pants under the gown, that's fine"
"Ok, we don't have any of your clothes here but I think there are some sweatpants in my bag you could wear"
"Sure"
Carina went through her bag and found the pants she was looking for before going back over to the bed. She disconnected Maya's catheter from the tubing attached to the bag and put the tubing through one of the pant legs before reconnecting it, Maya was watching what she was doing since she was sitting up.
"So, am I always going to need a catheter?" She asked
"Yes but most people can figure out a schedule and just do intermittent catheterization. So instead of having the bag attached you would just go to the bathroom every few hours, put one in then take it out when you're done, but it depends on your hand function and how your body reacts. That's probably something you'll learn in rehab" Carina explains
"Ok, I guess that's better than having a pee bag attached to me"
"Right now no one cares, pretty much everyone in the ICU has a catheter and probably most people in rehab. Plus there are lots of things you can do to hide it even if you need to keep the bag for longer. Now, can I finish getting you dressed, I think people will be here soon"
"Yes"

Carina got Maya's limp legs through the pants and pulled them up as far as she could, then rolled her to either side to pull them up the rest of the way.
"There you go" Carina said while reposition her arms and legs after rolling her
"Thanks" Maya says

A few minutes later Amelia came in
"Ready to go?" She asked
"Ya" Maya said
"Not yet, you still need the compression socks and binder before you get up" Carina tells her
"Right, almost ready"

Carina finished getting her ready and a nurse came in with the lift, the wheelchair was still in her room. Soon she was strapped into the wheelchair, ready to go and Amelia started leading them to the rehab wing.

"Welcome to the brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation unit" Amelia says as they walk through some automatic doors. "Do you want to go to your new room or do you want me to show you around?"
"I'm ok up still, we can look around" Maya says
"Ok, so this is obviously the entrance and front desk" Amelia says as she starts leading them down a hall.
"Here's the dining room, you can also eat in your room or go to the cafeteria" she says showing them a room
"Why do they have a separate dining room?" Maya asks
"They have adaptive utensils and people available to help and a lot of people are self-conscious eating in the cafeteria" Amelia explains
She shows them the huge PT room, another room for OT, a big room that has couches, a TV, some tables and games for people to hang out in, 2 offices of therapists that Maya won't have to go to if she sees Diane instead and a room for group therapy which sounds like torture to Maya. They saw quite a few people while they walked around but no one came to talk to them which Maya was happy about. Finally Amelia showed them Maya's new room.

"Here's your room, do you want to get out of the chair?" Amelia asked
"Ya, I'll lay down for a bit" Maya says, mostly just wanting an excuse to avoid people for a while longer
"Ok, these rooms have ceiling tracks for lifts so you don't need the big frame" she explained as she pulled the lift along the track from where it had been against the wall. Once Maya was in bed Amelia left.

"What do you think?" Carina asked as she started adjusting Maya's position.
"It's fine, seems like there are a lot of people here"
"I know, but maybe you'll like some of the people"
"Making friends is not something I'm good at"
"You just need to stay here for a while to keep recovering, then we'll get to be back home with just the two of us, well probably Andy too"
"I know. Can you take the binder off, I'm going to stay in bed for a bit"
"Si, can I check your ostomy and catheter bags too?"
"Ya" she didn't like her wife doing those things but she knows Carina doesn't care and that she'll probably still need help with stuff like this when she's home.

Carina checks the catheter bag which doesn't need to be emptied yet then takes off the binder and checks her ostomy bag which does need to be emptied so she does that. While she's closing the bag someone knocks on the door and comes in.
"Carina" Maya says when she hears someone come in
"One second, done, covered" Carina tells her as she quickly finishes and pulls Maya's gown back down

"Hello, I saw there was someone new so I thought I'd come introduce myself" a woman says as she enters the room
"Car can you sit me up a bit?" Maya asks, wanting to be able to see this new person
"Si," Carina says, raising the bed a bit "bene?"
"Ya, thanks"

"Hi" Maya says to the woman who she can now see is in a wheelchair
"Hi, my name's Jenna, I've been here for 3 weeks. I was nervous when I first got here so I like to introduce myself to everyone new."
"I'm Maya, this is my wife Carina" Maya tells her
"Nice to meet you, I'll let you get settle, I'm sure I'll see you around"
"Bye" Maya said and the woman left

"That was weird, why did she just come in?" Maya asks Carina
"I don't know, I think she was just being friendly"
"Can you ask Andy to come and bring some more clothes for me"
"Sure, I'll call her, do you want me to just but it on speakerphone so you can talk to her?"
"Sure"

"Hi Carina" Andy says when she answers the phone
"Hey Andy, it's both of us" Maya says
"Oh hi Maya, what's going on"
"I just moved to my new room in rehab and I was wondering if you could bring me some clothes. I'm wearing pants for the first time but I stole some of Carina's"
"Sure, what stuff do you want?"
"I don't know, probably pants that would be easy to get on me. I don't think I can wear shirts with the halo brace"
"Ok, I'll bring you some stuff, want me to come by now?"
"Whenever you want"
"I'll come soon"
"Ok, thanks Andy"
"No problem"
