New Year's Special

This is when they were kids.

Kurono pov

"Kai, come on! Come on!" I urged my best friend along, "We need to hurry and set everything up!"

"I don't see the rush Hari, it's just the start of a new year. And why can't we go any other time to this 'special place' of yours?You know a time that isn't at night."

"Anything can happen next year Kai!"

"Anything can happen anyday."

"Just follow me." I pulled him by his hand as I lead him to a spot in the woods.

"Here. This is where we'll stay."

I put the blanket down and the food on top. I looked at my watch.

"Only 20 minutes left Kai! Let's start eating!"

"This place is dirty."

"It's nature, Kai. The air is at least fresher here than inside. Plus I got us a blanket to sit on. Come on Kai."

He hesitated as he sat on the blanket next to me and took off his mask.

"Where did you get this food? Not from outside right?"

"Of course Kai! I made it if you were really wondering."

He looked at me skeptically, but tried my food anyway. His eyes glowed as he tried and ate more of it. I smiled as I put some food and ate happily.

"See! It's good!"

"I didn't know you could cook."

"Yeah. I love cooking. You should try it you know."

"It's too messy."

"It's a life skill that makes it so that you don't have to eat outside every time you're hungry."

"I've got a better idea."

"Really? What is it?" I asked as I layed down on the blanket.

"I just keep you and you make food for me." he turned and looked at me. We held eye contact for a bit before I got up into a sitting position. He's actually serious.

"How do we know that we'll be together forever? Or even next year? Next month? Boss is strict. He might kill me or worse throw me out if I can't meet his expectations."

"I'll make sure that never happens."

"But-"

"I'll make sure that never happens."

I turned my head to face him to see him staring at me. We held eye contact before music from my phone randomly started playing.

"Sorry about that," I said turning off my alarm. "I put an alarm for 11:50. 10 minutes until the new year."

"Do you have some sort of New Years resolution?"

"Yup! But you go first Kai!"

"Well, next year I want to be better. I want to be stronger and for people to respect me more. Boss said that he wants me to take over for him after he dies. That means I need to show everyone I'm the one in charge. Boss has taken care of me for 5 years and has already determined that I'm better than everyone else. They need to see it too. I also need to make sure boss doesn't change his mind. I'm going to take over the whole operation. And I need to learn how to do it. "

"Wow. Mine isn't as big as yours."

"Well say it anyway."

"I want to work harder to make sure boss keeps me. I also need to make sure you trust me completely. I want to work harder to show that I'm useful."

"Boss would take anyone. If he sees a kid who needs help he'd take them. Weather they deserve it or not. You definitely deserve it."

"Yeah. I just want to make sure he won't leave me you know. If I'm useful, like extremely useful he'll need me. He'd never even think about throwing me away. He couldn't."

I won't let it happen. Not again.

"We're just 10 Hari. We have a long way to go to reach our goal. So, we better try the hardest we can."

"Yeah. Let's do it."

"I'll work my hardest to become the boss-"

"And I'll be with you the whole way."

He pulled his hand out in front of me.
I pulled my hand and we shook on it. I then brought up my pinky and he gave me a confused look.

"It's a pinky promise! That way our deal will last forever and you can never replace me!"

He gave a small chuckle and interlocked our pinkies.

"Replace you? You really think that there is someone that can make me trust them like I trust you? I shook your hand Hari. I don't do that very often. Everyone else's germs are bad, but I know you're clean so I only trust you like this."

I smiled brightly and jumped on him. Tackling him into a hug. He hesitated but eventually wrapped his arms around me, hugging me back.

"Only for you, Hari. Make sure you know that."

"I do. That's why I wanted to do this with you. It's our first time having new years together. And hopefully just the first one of the rest of our lives."

He pulled back from the hug as I let go.

"Alright. Make that a promise."
