I've Never Been Happy

The very far past.

A man with grey braided hair and a beard lay shakily breathing on the floor, one with brown hair and goggles sitting next to him with fear.

Someone - the caretaker - ran up to them with a frantic face.

"Dan?! What's happened to Justin!?"

"I- James, we've been keeping a secret from you. Basically- uh- we're magical people of some kind, and we protect the town from Witches. Justin was one first, then I snuck out and became one too."

"O-oh." He looked somewhat hurt, but mainly sympathetic. "What happened to him?!"

"He- he's really badly injured, James- I don't know what to do! He might die- he got beaten up in a fight and well- I don't know what to do!" 'Dan' responds, looking up.

Suddenly, Kyubey jumped over, landing beside James's feet and looking over at him, much to the shock of the man.

"Oh, he's very badly injured, that isn't good. I think only a magical girl with healing abilities could save him, especially since he doesn't have enough magic to heal himself..."

"Wh- what are you?!" James cried, backing up.

"I'm Kyubey, and I made your friends magical. And I can save your friend if you wish too."

"..Huh?"

"If you make a wish, then I can make you a magical girl! And you'll fight witches alongside your friends!"

"James, you don't have to do it if you don't want to." Dan clarified. "Only do it if-"

"I'm up for it!" James yelled, suddenly looking determined. "I wish for the ability to save - to heal Justin! And all my friends!"

Suddenly, a glow came from James's chest, before he collapsed onto the ground, soul gem falling out and into his hand. It fit firmly in his palm.

"That's your soul gem." Kyubey explained. "You will need that to transform."

"It's also the source of your magic." Dan added. "I- can't believe you did that, but hey. Justin will be surprised."

"Huh, right." James just nods, before turning to Justin, and placing his hand on his chest.

"Unleash the magic within your heart!" Kyubey commanded, which James complied with.

Justin's eyes opened with a start.

"Huh? What's going on? What happened?" He asked, with a weak tone.

"Oh, thank god, it worked." James breathed a sigh of relief. Kyubey climbed on his back.

"What worked, what do you mea-" Justin took one look at Kyubey and realised. "You-you made a contract?! To heal me?!"

"Yep." James nodded. "Cause you're my friend."

Justin sighed, before giving James a slight smile.

"I..don't know how to react to that. Guess I gotta tell you about the timelines now."

"Wh-what timelines?" James tilted his head in confusion.

"Hell yeah! Now we have someone else to fight with!" Dan cheered, beaming.

Now all three of them were magical girls, so all three of them could fight witches together.

Fighting a witch, with a green gooping head and roses decorating it. Justin's doing the best, shooting the witch and letting it explode, dodging underneath it as it goes to grab him. He's had the most experience, of course he's the best.
Dan as well, doing a lot. Slicing through the cotton ball shaped familiars like it's nothing and bludgeoning a few, even. He was powerful enough to do that - and he seemed to be enjoying it, too. Considering his wish, it made sense.
