Pt. 14 A Way Out

A few days later-

A basic fish trap Mei designed stayed its natural place in the river, you pulled the fish out, gutting and filleting as best you could, before throwing them on the fire.

You rise from your bent over position, only to sit down by the river, throwing a few stones into the river before sighing deeply.

Y/N: We really gotta get outta here...

Your head snaps up as Mei shouts.

Mei: Bear!

Already, the bear races towards you, charging forward and snarling, in response, you sprung up and darted out of the way. The bear's claws swiped upwards, taking the leg of your pants with it, and throwing you forward.

The impact slammed you into the floor, your head slamming harder on the back, the sky went black for a solid second, before it started to lighten up, only little by little.

You saw only the outline of the bear close in on what looked certain to be its next meal.

That of course, was you.

Your muscles tensed up and your neck went down, into your collarbone, still unable to move or see, there was no end other than death by a bear.

As all went black, you heard a 'pop' as far as you could hear, as that too started to numb.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Seven pop sounds, the last almost missed by you.

Then, all was not black, it all came back to you, the fear, the instinct all so suddenly to you. Your back sprung up, yet to see no bear, only the familiar sticks and trunk that made your home.

Y/N: Huh? I'm. Not dead?

Mei pops her head through the space in the shelter, a huge smile on her face.

Mei: Yes! You had me worried there honey...

Y/N: The fuck happened?

Mei: Oh. So basically that bear had you, but I drew my pistol and unloaded the whole magazine into it.

Y/N: Right... the fuck happened to my head? Fuck.

You groaned the last word, holding the back of your head.

Mei: Yeah... you were bleeding from your head when I got to you.

Y/N: Shit. Thanks Mei, I owe you one.

Mei: Well, it's not done yet... you're still in a pretty bad way, rest should bring you back to health but, y'know... if this happens again... well...

Y/N: I know. We're fucked.

Mei: Don't worry about it. Not right now. Just... relax.

She tried to climb into your shelter, only able to barely fit.

Y/N: Mei... what are you doing?

Mei: Just relax okay?

She climbed on top of you softly, sure to not hurt you.

Y/N: M-Mei?

Mei: Relax.

She grabbed your hands and laid them to your sides, before stroking both hands softly with her thumbs.
