Present Day

The predawn dark was the pinnacle to any CO and their Squadrons.

All would take advantage of the early start.

One, more than others.

Sierra would always sneak out of her quarters, leaving the zone of their outpost, Garix, far from the ONI base on Hyradelphia.

She geared up, like any morning, not disturbing her squad-mates while loading a spare magnum, and dipped out of the base to her quiet place.

She, and her personal tablet.

She held it close to her, inside the padding of her training suit as she evaded the early morning patrol, slipping out the damaged part of the boundary to disappear into the treeline.

She knew the patch of forest like the back of her hand, every rock, tree, and game trail in her way, never making tracks of her own.

At the edge of the cliffside was an elder willow, strong and resilient that she would climb up into, taking her weathered place in the spread of the canopy, taking out her tablet to it's previous opening.

The dull blue lights carried to some of the highest leaves on the branches with each swipe of the tablet, Sierra deep in her 'studies'.

She had a growing fascination about a faction of the Covenant, learned in one of the classrooms over a year ago, the Sangheili.

She had already taught herself the language, their hieroglyphs, how to speak it, proverbs, and fighting techniques.

What the UNSC had in its databanks wasn't enough to feed the girl's enticement, and her hunger for knowledge only grew more as she rehashed old pages, and texts.

She would take her knife, at times, and carved her name into the tree in Sangheili glyphs, saying her own name many times.

"Saliel..."

She gave out a small, disheartened sigh.

She knew how dangerous it would be if she had ever had the misfortune, but she dreamt of being able to meet a Sangheili face to face, and just learn in their steps.

"I wish... It'd be better than-"

"Sierra."

A low, carried voice sounded below her, stopping any more words from forming as she pursed her lips together with a grind of her teeth and she stashed the tablet on her person.

She peered over and through the branches down at her Commanding Officer, standing quietly as he peered up at her.

"...Hey, Roman." She greeted him, Flatley.

He gave her a short, pursed smile as he looked up into the girl's eyes.

"Hey, Kiddo." He greeted back softly.

"... I gotta get down now, huh?" She said as she took a breath, earning a nod.

With another sigh and an 'Okay' under her breath, and slipped down and out of the tree.

"C'mon, Sierra, what are you doing out here?" Roman questioned her with a hint of attitude.

"It's not like I wasn't planning on coming back, Roman. I'm always on time." Sierra said as she walked up to him.

"It's my job to make sure that all my kids in our platoon are under my supervision, cared for, and safe. You, young lady, are none of those things."

Sierra scoffed.
