Staring out into the rain-becoming-drizzle, I sigh and dash to the Medicine Den, almost bumping into SunSpot, the deputy on the way. As I race into the entryway, Hawkwing steps in the way.
"Woah there rain drop, you're going to track in mud. Hm, that's not a bad warrior name, RainDrop"
I purr softly "That would be pretty good. Say, we've been pretty low on herbs recently. Can we go collect some?"
"Er, you are almost an apprentice... I think it'll be fine."
"AW YES! Thank you so much HawkWing!" The medicine cat smiled and purred.
"Let's go now, and pray to StarClan the ground isn't too wet..."*******
Trotting along the soft lichen covering the forest floor, I sniff the familiar sweet scent of chervil hiding nearby. Following the fragrant odor, I find the herb nestled in between some oak roots. After plucking the leaves from the plant, I notice a bush with bright, tasty looking, red berries. I set down the chervil, making my way to the bush.
Only a whisker away, I open my mouth to take a bite. Abruptly, a figure smashes into me like a boulder, knocking the wind out of my lungs. Hissing, I blindly claw at the attacker.
"Woah! Calm down RainKit, it's just me" HawkWing said with a chuckle and a cut on his cheek. After some deep gasps I managed to crack out my voice
"W-hy dya do it th-th-en" I coughed out
"Maybe because you were about to eat one of the most dangerous plants in the forest, I mean, they're literally called DEATHberries."
"Oh, eh... oops?"
"Oops indeed little one, grab that chervil and let's head back."
Birds chirp above as we walk a well walked path the camp. A bright red squirrel catches my eye as it launches itself into a tree. A quiet snap from above almost makes me jump as we near the large entrance to camp.
I take a sigh of relief as I notice MellowTail is out of camp, or at least out of sight. I walk to the left, where the medicine den is and place my chervil next to the yarrow.
"Bet you can't catch me, ElkPaw!" Chimed the high pitched voice of DuskPaw from afar.
I should probably go see them, that could be fun.
"Where are you going?"
"Oh, I'm gonna go talk to MousePaw and the others!"
"Ok, be careful though"
Confused, I race towards the large group of apprentices. I'm met with a few smiles and a scowl from CinderPaw, and as DuskPaw and his pursuer round near I get a fresh frown from the dark tabby.
"Hi! I know I'm not an apprentice yet, but Im super close. Can I play with you guys?"
"Mother says we can't play with you" CinderPaw retorted.
"Mothers rules are stupid, there's no other reason not to play with her, other than she just said so." MousePaw replied. Another apprentice from behind them snorted.
"Your mom sounds like a buzzkill, right Hailpaw?"
"Totally, cmon, uh... RainKit was it?" Questioned the aforementioned Hailpaw.
"Yep."
"Cool! We could teach you how to hunt! Ok, ok, so you lower your body down like this....."*******
After practicing on a moss ball for the rest of the day, I think it's safe to say I'm pretty good at the hunting stuff. Strolling the Nursery, MellowTail passes me with a rare smile. Unnerved, I pick up the pace to my usual nest in the empty den. Is being alone in her normal? MellowTail only left when the others became apprentices... I shake off the worrying thought and lay down.
