They were all assembled in their mother's room, and stood in a straight line like trained militants, still full of patriotism and completely empty of wartime experiences. Five in number, with chests out, heads up and stiffened muscles. Three girls from the university and two boys in secondary school, who were all on summer break.
They had been summoned after an alarm was raised, concerning a piece of missing jewel.
A piece of jewelry had been stolen, Mrs Bih's very delicate and expensive piece, a filigree setting of silver. A gift that had been shipped to her accidentally by her sister in-law in Spain who remained disgruntled and bitter about her mistake. She had meant to send it to her elder brother's wife, but had scribbled down the wrong address in the frenzy of a gathering and the excitement of wine, thereby shipping off to the younger brother's wife with whom she had had a squabble which was never resolved. Mrs Bih had taken it as a sign of reconciliation, smiled and bragged a little tomuch to her friends of her value in the family.
It was a priced possession, which she dearly cherished, a sign of victory. It was gone from it's little box, which had been carefully wrapped in a thick disguise and hidden in her room's closet, a room which all her children had access to and wandered in and out as they pleased. She stood, hands akimbo, face masked with anger and flaring nostrils. Her lip were set in a thin line and she glared at her children, piercing them with her eyes.
"Which one of you took the necklace from it's box?" she asked, her voice dangerously low and eyes whisking to and fro against the bodies of her suspects.
"It's not me!" Mary exclaimed, jumped slightly and raised her hands up.
"I don't even know where you kept it," Elisabeth said, crossing her arms under her chest and yawning as if bored, much to her mother's discontentment.
"You know I can't do a thing like that! You all know me na," Susan hissed, stood hands akimbo, twitched her lips a little and wore scowl.
"Even me sef, abeg! What will I even be doing with jewelry? Girls! Come clean. Me I don't have time for this. I have important things to do," James drawled for emphasis. "I have to finish level thirty four of my video game," he said rapidly, angrily and dug his hands inside his jeans pocket.
Peter arranged the long fake silver chain on his neck and after holding his chin for a while thinking of nothing, he started in his induced accent. "Mom ya see right? Me ain't able to do stuff like that, ya see right? Niggas like me ain't involve in all this bullshit and you know what?" He said posing like an untrained model. "I will like to fuck off, leave y'all to it, to handle the matter, y'all understand?" The menacing look he got from his mother changed his mind and he stood Whistling softly.First chapter down some more to go( don't know how many yet 😅)
