Mary stood still with all eyes on her. She opened her mouth several times but speech clung to her throat and refused to rush out, making her look like a fish out of water. Her mother eyes on her could drill a hole . As she was thinking of what to say, she was snapped out of her thoughts by an angry roar.
"Mary! Mary! Start talking. So it was you?" Mrs Bih laughed and clapped her hands," And you were making as if you never knew anything. I have caught you today,"
"Ma..ma, mama it's a lie oh," Mary defended
"Mary! You stole my necklace, the one and only necklace. Your aunt's peace offering to me," Mrs Bih shook her head in disapproval
"It was not, it was not the necklace i took," Mary stammered, "It was ehmmmm," she scratched her head, "It was ehm...."
"Shut up my friend! See the way you are trying to conjure a lie. You think I am a fool?" Mrs Bih scolded.
"No mama it's not like that oh " Mary tried to defend herself.
"It's like how? No Mary tell me, am listening" she pushed up her ears, "Talk na," Mary stood speechless playing with the helm of her pink T-shirt, looking down at her toes to avoid eye contact.
"Mama, now that you talk about it, I remember something, "Susan said, "I heard her and her friend talking about one party like that. She surely wore you necklace to attend it." She completed, having meted out her revenge against Mary for not taking her to the party.
"Is it true Mary? Answer me!" Mrs Bih Hollered.
"It's not true, I can't do that," Mary said.
"Or did you sell it, See just tell me what you did, don't test my patience, don't test my patience." Mrs Bih continued irritated by Mary's slowness to tell her about her jewelry.
"I saw her with a new dress and shoe, it seemed expensive,"James added and turned away smiling.
Mrs Bih lifted her hands to her head, "I said it! This children want to kill me," she turned to Mary, "You want to kill me, you sold it and bought a dress, with shoe sef, I am finished!" she sat on her bed in silence, looking at the ceiling. She was brought out of trance by her daughter voice.
"Mama its not me , I didn't take it I promise, but I saw Susan with a new phone, very expensive one," Mary said pointing an accusation finger at Susan, who was feigning shock and holding her chest.
