They had been together for almost a year and a half now. They reconciled and eventually confessed their feelings for each other not long after. It was Diluc that told Kaeya first, saying that he had been in love with the bluenette for as long as he could remember. The night he had hurt Kaeya was one of his greatest regrets and keeping silent about his feelings for him would become one more regret in his list of many if he didn't try.
Kaeya had been speechless at the time but Diluc waited for an answer, praying to the archons that this man would return his affections. He felt sparks fly in his chest when Kaeya admitted to feeling the same way.
They were happy for a long while until Kaeya started having his doubts and his insecurities started to pile up.
A liar.
You don't deserve him.
You don't deserve happiness.
He hates you.
You don't belong by his side.
You don't belong anywhere, sinner.
He had tried to ignore these negative thoughts but they only grew louder as he came to overthink. Maybe it's true.
He became somewhat distant and believed that he didn't deserve these moments of happiness. Worst of all, he believed Diluc doesn't actually love him.
"I think we should break up."
They were having an evening stroll in the vineyards when Kaeya decided to end it. He bit his lip, refusing to look at Diluc. The tears were already blurring his vision as the silence between them grew louder by the second.
"...what do you mean?" Diluc asks ever so quietly as if saying it out loud would confirm whatever Kaeya just said.
"I said...we should break up, Diluc."
The hands that gripped hard on Kaeya's arms burned as Diluc looked at him with confusion and disbelief.
"W-why? I don't understand."
"There's nothing to understand. I just want to break up with you." Kaeya choked down his urge to cry as he tried to escape from the other man's grasp which only made his hold tighter.
"There has to be a reason, Kaeya. Please, tell me a-and I'll fix it, I promise." He begged, voice shaking.
"I...just don't want to be with you anymore."
That was a lie. Kaeya wanted nothing more than to stay by Diluc's side but he couldn't. Diluc deserves better, not just some sinner from a dead country who doesn't belong anywhere and the one who lied to the people he had considered family.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me again."
He couldn't. If he did, he would take it back.
"LOOK AT ME!" Diluc yelled, not caring if everyone in the property heard as he shook the bluenette.
Kaeya still refused to turn his gaze. Looking at anywhere but the redhead who he knew had tears streaming down his face.
Confusion and disbelief were quickly replaced by anger. Diluc fumed, blinded by his emotions as he harshly let go of Kaeya.
"I gave you everything. How could you doubt my love for you? Was it not enough for you?" Diluc scoffed. "Maybe you never did love me at all. As expected of a liar."
It hurt. As if his heart was taken out right out of his chest and burned right in front of him. It hurt even more than the night Diluc had left.
Without a word, he left the vineyard and walked back to the city, alone and colder than ever. He cried himself to sleep that night and the following nights thereafter, hugging Diluc's shirt he had left there a few nights before.
