Another great day to be captain of the royal guard. Dream thinks to himself as he walks down the dusty main road of the kingdom, waving to passing townspeople. The sun was peeking from behind the rocky mountain range that blocks The Green Kingdom from most outer dangers. If Dream focuses enough he can hear the faint call of birds in nearby trees over the rustle and bustle of people on the street.
Young school boy runs up to Dream with a wide smile plastered across his face.
“What might you be up to little one?” Dream talks to the child in a friendly manner. “It isn't trouble is it?” he adds jokingly.
The boy reaches into his pocket and pulls out a bright red apple about the size of his hand and gives it to dream. Dream accepts the fruit and thanks the boy before he runs off again. The perks of being the captain of the royal guard, the people's love and respect. Dream continues his leisurely morning patrol, tossing the apple in the air and catching it almost effortlessly. All around him people were wheeling around carts and setting up concession stands. People were decorating things. Some of the most decorated shops included the flower shop and the barkery, decked out with blue ribbons hanging across the door frames with violets and irises in the window sills. Because today was the day of the arrival of Prince George from the blue kingdom.
The Green Kingdom and The Blue Kingdom had not had the best history together, with a long history of wars spanning generations. The wars had always cost many lives, but none quite as important as the last war, where the Green kingdom had suffered the loss of the former captain of the royal guard. It's because of that war Dream had been recognized for his bravery and efforts by the king and had been made the youngest captain of the royal guard at 18. To end the long history of wars the kings had come to an agreement that there shall be a royal marriage bringing together the two kingdoms and preventing any further wars.
Dream wonders how they ever came to a decision like that, after being lifelong enemies finally putting years of wars aside for an arranged marriage. It struck Dream as odd, however it wasn't his place to say anything so he keeps his thoughts to himself.
As Dream goes to turn a corner he hears someone call from behind him.
“DREAM!!!”
Dream pivots to see a familiar dark haired man jogging towards him.
“Our shift doesn't start for another ten minutes.” It was just Sapnap, Dream's right hand man and best friend. They practically grew up together in knight training. They both disobeyed direct orders and ran off to join the war when they were 17. Sap nearly had lost an arm or two on the battlefield, seeing as he had no self preservation, and if it hadn't been for Dreams' strategy skills he might have. “What are you doing out so early?”
“I gotta maintain the people's image.” Dream responds jokingly.
“You're already the most respected due in the whole kingdom, besides the king, What else could you possibly want?” Sapnap sighs.
“I can't say I want much.” Dream stares out at the beautiful scenery for the sunrise over the kingdom. “My life is pretty darn good the way it is.”
“Yeah yeah whatever” Sapnap dismisses. “Anyways are you gonna eat that apple or can I have it? I kinda rushed out today looking for you.”
“Aww where you worried about me?” Dream tossed him the apple.
“Well when you were suddenly gone when I woke up it's only natural I would be the slightest bit concerned.” Sapnap defends.
“Whatever” Dream rolls his eyes at the statement.
They continue their patrol. Dream never really considered these mornings with Sapnap work. The streets were usually pretty peaceful with the ociational petty theft from a fruit stand, which was usually a kid, in which Dream would make them return the fruit and let them off with a warning. So most of the time it would just be Dream and Sapnap just talking about life and anything else that came to mind. Although Dream did enjoy these morning patrols, which felt more like strolls, there was always eventually a time to head back to the castle.
Back at the castle servants filled the halls just as busily, if not busier, working on decorating as much as the townspeople. Blue satin streamers hung from the large marble pillars in the great hall, every curtain was freshly pressed without wrinkles, and the silverware was perfectly spaced out on the table in the dining hall. Everything must be perfect, as to the king's orders. Even Dream himself was to wear a decorative suit of armor for the occasion.
Soon people began to line the castle gates for the arrival of Prince George. As Dream glanced at the crowd he could tell some were wary of this visitor, others were ready to welcome him with open arms. Dream was positioned to stand next to the king at the arrival ceremony. He didn't mind the ceremonial duties of being a knight, Unlike Sapnap who opted for crowd control duty rather than the formal stuff.
Some time later almost everybody in the kingdom had gathered to witness the arrival of Prince George. Finally a cerulean carriage drawn by two large white clydesdales trotted up to the main gates of the castle. When the horses stop Dream can see some little kids marveling at their size. He notices one of the kids is the kid from earlier, who was now feeding one of the horses an apple.
“Now announcing the arrival of Prince Greorge Notfound of The Blue Kingdom.” A member of the royal guard addresses.
A servant opens the carriage door and out steps a boy who seemed to be about dreams age if not a couple years older. He has dark brown hair and wears royal apparel with a long red cape that would touch the ground if he had been any shorter. His frame was petite and he walked elegantly down the row. He gave a little wave to the crowd as he walked past. He didn't seem to be arrogant like Dream had expected the prince to be, with all of his years he had dealt with the princesses, he had expected him to act in a rich snobby sort of way. However there wasn't even a hint of vanity. Prince George made his way towards the king and bowed before him, not in like a commoner to the king but more of in a way two people of high status may greet one another.
“Thank you, your majesty and your kingdom for having me.”Prince George says.
“Of course, this is best for both our kingdoms.” The king replies.
“I'm sure I will enjoy my stay.”The Prince claims.
“I'm sure you will find all the accommodations to your liking.”The king assures “you will be assisted with all of my best servants and accompanied by our very own captain of the royal guard. “
Dream had not been aware of this fact, although this wasn't the place or time to object. So Dream simply kneeled and responded with “I’m at your service.” Dream swears he could see a little smirk from George, however it was gone as fast as it came.
Soon Prince George was settled in and it was dreams break before the night shift he would be taking while the prince was visiting. Dream met up with Sapnap by an old oak tree in the fields where they used to go as kids to get away from chores. The tree had many marks from where Dream and Sapnap had decided to use it as a training dummy. The sun had been hiding behind some clouds now and beginning to set beyond the fields.
“HA The look on your face dude!!!” Sapnap mocked Dream's surprise at the ceremony earlier.
“Whatever, I should have expected something like this. I mean they wouldn't just give the safety of the prince to any random knight.” Dream says.
“So what are you gonna do about it?” Sapnap asks.
“Do what any good knight would do. Fulfill my duties.” Dream replies.
“I wouldn't.”Sapnap says.
“See how i said ‘a good knight’” Dream jokes. “Besides this cant be that bad it's only for one month.”
