Mrs. Clearbrook announced we were having a test over Nothing but the Truth, and that it would also be over all the vocabulary from the book and our annotations. I groaned and looked at Harry, who had transferred too late in the year to actually have read the book. He would be excused from this test, lucky fellow.

After class, Harry walked with me out of the class.

“So, Ency, um, I know I don’t have to take that test, but if you want, you could um… you could come to my house and I’ll help you study…?” He suggested. My heart started thumping and my ears started ringing. I suddenly found it extremely difficult to keep a steady pace of breathing. My binder was slipping from my now clammy hands and my feet seemed to have quickened their pace. I was a mess.

“I, um, I would… yeah… yeah I’d like that…” I squeezed out in a hurry. I looked up at him, his green eyes sinking into mine. A wide grin slid onto his face, his deep dimples popping up excitedly.

“Alright, yeah, great! So um, how’s today after school? Just walk home with me and we’ll study then!” He said excitedly, his hands fiddling with each other. Aww he was nervous! Or ADHD… either way I found it cute.

“Sure…!” I tried to sound excited, but the thought of being alone with him kind of made me nervous. I’d never been alone with a guy, so this would be an entirely new experience for me. Then, a new thought popped into my head. Was he asking me out? Or simply being friendly?

“Like, a date?” I blurted, my lips moving and my lungs pushing out the words before brain could give it a thumbs up. I had to stick my hands in my pockets to keep them from going up to my mouth.

Harry laughed nervously, looking straight ahead. After a few seconds he looked down at me.

“Just like a date.” He confirmed. I could feel an intense scarlet color flood my cheeks. “A casual study date,” Harry clarified with a smile. His cheeky way of getting his friendliness across just made me melt like a candle. I tucked my hair behind my ear as I saw Bethany approaching us both. She gave me a look, noticing my cheeks flushed in a light pink now. ‘What did he do?’ Her eyes asked me. I just shook my head, silently telling her ‘not now’.

I said goodbye to Harry as Bethany pushed me into the locker room, desperate for information.

“What happened?” She asked loudly. I shushed her and dragged her to our corner in the back.

“He asked me to go to his house for a study date today,” I whispered softly. Bethany gasped and smiled.

“A study date?!” She squealed. I nodded quickly and scrunched my face up in an enthusiastic smile. Bethany’s face dropped as she glanced behind me. I turned my head to see what she saw. Of course. Rachel.

“A date, huh? How adorable, your first date.” She snickered. I just looked at her plainly.

“Rachel, how is it that your locker is all the way across the locker room, yet you always end up over here to harass me?” I questioned. She looked up at the ceiling then dropped her gaze back on me.

“Whatever, Ency, who even cares? So, who’s your date with?” She interrogated. I ran the thought of Rachel’s face puckering up as if she just ate a lemon as my words of Harry actually showing interest in me entered her ears.

“Harry, from our reading class,” I smirked, knowing it would shatter a piece of her.

As I thought, her malicious smirk dropped to a scowl in an instant. Her chest began rising up and down angrily, her smoky blue eyes clouding over with heart break. I could tell her brain was trying to wrap itself around the fact that Harry chose me over her. An actual guy chose me over her. Not that she was ever actually in the running.

“You mean, like, he asked you to study with him, even though he doesn’t even have to take the test?” She gulped, speaking softly. I grinned, taking in her miserable atmosphere. I would relish this moment always.

“Precisely.” I nodded. Rachel looked down at the ground and spun around quickly to leave. I turned back to Bethany, who looked a little guilty. “What?” I asked.

“The poor girl looked crushed! Like someone told her that her dog just died or something…” Bethany said, staring at where Rachel was standing.

“Whatever! She deserves to feel that way; she’s made me feel like that too many times to count,” I explained, as I began changing into my gym clothes.
