Harry came bursting through my bedroom door that Monday evening. I was in bed watching TV in Nike shorts and a sports bra. I screamed and pulled the covers up to my neck.

“HI.” I stated loudly with the discomfort on the edge of my tone.

“Oh don’t worry I don’t care! But look!” Harry charged forward and snapped a flyer in front of my face.

“X-Factor auditions? On Friday?” I glanced up at Harry, who was grinning.

“Yeah! Let’s do it! Let’s chase our dreams!” He shouted and picked me up under my arms and flung me around. I squealed and jumped back onto the bed under the covers.

“I don’t think I can… but I’ll be in the crowd cheering you on! And voting for you in the live finals!” I tried to give the flyer back to him, but his hands stayed firm on his hips.

“Ency, you have a magnificent voice. You’re going to make it.” Harry encouraged. He sat softly on the edge of my bed. He glanced at the TV after I hadn’t replied to him.

“Well,” He laughed, noticing I’d been watching Hannah Montana reruns. “You could always go as a different person.” He said jokingly. I shot up. That wasn’t a bad idea.

“Wait a minute,” I said, mulling over the possibilities of it.

“Ency I was kidding,” Harry’s told me, his smile fading. I shook my head.

“I’m not, though. Just think about it- I don’t want to sing in front of people, but some sort of alter ego probably wouldn’t mind!” I explained to him.

“Ency, you do realize the only difference is a wig? And that it would still be you singing? Not a different person?” He looked at me like I was crazy.

“I know that, but it would help, because no one would know who I am, just… Maisey Barrows.” I stated. Maisey Barrows. My alter-ego. She would have long, silky, cherry-coke red hair, quite a hipster-style wardrobe and be confident, but not cocky. Likable, but not oober-sweet. Smart, but not show offish. Shy, but not standoffish. Out-there, but not in-your-face. Perfect.

“As your boyfriend, I try to support everything you do. But also as your boyfriend, I see you as perfection. So, naturally, I’m very confused as to why you’d hide your true self.” Harry sighed, setting his hands in his lap.

“OK so I wouldn’t want to have to have the people at school know who I am! If I got kicked off, that’d be so embarrassing! Plus I have stage fright! But Maisey doesn’t! But if I win somehow, I promise I’ll reveal my true self, if it means that much to you.” I told him, tossing my hands too-and-fro.

“OK. So you’re auditioning?” He asked for clarification. I nodded in reply, awaiting the grin and hug I would receive.

“Tomorrow after school we will go get you a real wig and some nice clothes and transform you to Maisey for your audition,” Harry said softly into my ear, but I could hear his smile through his words.
