We arrived at Lou’s house fifteen minutes later. She was quite nice, her hair very blonde, and a little tike named Lux running around the flat.

“Hey, Lux!” Harry said in a child-voice, picking the little blonde toddler up and setting her on his shoulders. She let out a giggle and held tight to his curls as he ran throughout the living room making airplane noises with his mouth. I just leaned up against the wall admiring the moment.

“Hi there, I’m Lou.” She coughed, poking her head into my line of vision. “I hear you need a red wig?” She held out her hand for me to shake as she led me to a small office filled with wigs and make ups and nail polishes.

“Yeah…” I breathed, glancing around at the assortment of wigs. She pressed a button on a remote and suddenly one of the shelves with a few wigs lined on it opened up like a door.

“What the…?” I let out as it revealed a room double the size of the office designated to wigs. There were black wigs and blonde wigs and straight wigs and curly wigs and green wigs and pink wigs and every kind in between.

As soon as I stepped in the room I noticed an immediate change in temperature and dryness in the air.

“Ooh, chilly,” I observed, rubbing my hands over the goose bumps that made a surprise appearance.

“Yeah, if it’s too hot and humid they frizz up. This is the ultimate climate for them.” Lou explained. I walked around the large room admiring each and every wig. They were all so silky and real.

“So, here’s the red section… just pick one you like and we’ll get it fitted!” She showed me to a section filled with red wigs of all kinds. Bright ones and soft ones and long ones and pixie cuts and so much more. My eyes immediately fell onto a long, perfectly cherry-coke red wig. It was the color of a really dark cherry. It was really long and straight with slight, natural-looking waves in it. There were subtle layers and it looked extremely soft.

“You like that one?” She observed, opening up a cabinet under the shelves that had a whole series of carefully packaged wigs. She selected the kind I picked out after quickly wrapping a tape measure around my head.

“Here you go! Now, I understand you’re auditioning for X-Factor in this wig, and going all Hannah Montana on this whole thing?” She asked as she handed me the wig.

“Yeah, so if you could give me some wig lessons-” I said, taking the wig, but she quickly interjected with a laugh.

“Honey! Wig lessons? I’m going with you! Only a professional can make a wig look real and stay on with any amount of jumping and dancing. I can even do your makeup, if you’d like?” She laughed. I grinned really wide and embraced Lou in a tight hug.

“Oh, thank you Lou!” I shouted, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. She let out another laugh at my sudden burst of emotion. “But you know you can’t tell anyone of this, you know.” I clarified. She stepped back to look me in the eye.

“I know. I swear on Lux’s life that I won’t tell a soul. You know, Hillary Duff did this same thing? She doesn’t actually have a brunette sister. That’s just really good TV effects. And I was the wig master.” She whispered proudly. My jaw dropped.

“You mean Hillary is really a brunette and you fashioned the blonde wig? All this time?” I gaped, still comprehending my now shattered childhood.

“All this time. And don’t worry; she won’t mind that I told you. She’s settled down, and if this is all over the tabloids tomorrow, she wouldn’t care. I’ve talked to her about it.” Lou confirmed. I tugged at my long brown hair and twirled it around my fingers.

“Do you think we could try this on?” I asked, holding the wig out to her. She grinned at me and nudged me toward a stool. She brushed all the tangles out of my hair and sprayed some sort of protectant on it. She twisted my hair very quickly into a cap that squished all my hair so it looked like nothing. She set the wig on my head with a type of adhesive spread on the seam of the cap. She adjusted and combed and tousled and adjusted some more.

“You’re done,” She said, smiling down at me with a load of admiration behind her eyes. “And might I be the first to say, Maisey, you look absolutely gorgeous.” I felt my face turned the color of my new hair with heat rising up in them.

“Really?” I blushed, playing with my finger nails. Lou smiled and told me to see for myself and nodded towards a mirror. I slid myself into the view of the mirror and… wow. I look like an entirely new person, and that’s just with a change in hair color. I haven’t even gotten clothes or makeup. I combed my fingers through the soft wig and twisted it around my fingers, like I did so often with my real hair.

“Can I go show Harry?” I spun around, feeling the long red hair whipping around behind me. Lou motioned to the doorway, and Harry stood there, leaning against the wall, with a beautiful smirk drawn on his face.

“Stunning.” Harry said, walking slowly towards me. He grabbed my hands and pulled me close to him. He leaned in close and tucked the hair behind my ear before pulling me in for a kiss. I heard Lou whistle, but other than that, it was as if I was in an entirely different world.

“No Harwy!” A small voice suddenly screeched and gently tugged at Harry’s pant-leg.

Harry moved out of the kiss and glanced down to see a distressed Lux pulling as hard as she could on his pants to get his attention.

“Aw Lux! Don’t worry, you’ll always be my number one girl,” Harry picked her up and winked at me as he said it. Lux buried her face in his neck as Harry stroked her back with his big hands. He slowly turned her around to face me.

“Lux, can you say hi to Maisey? She’s just a friend, don’t worry.” Harry inquired, lightly grabbing her small wrist to forcibly wave at me.

I put on my best baby-interaction face and waved softly back and told her hello. Being a little girl, Lux let out a weird little noise and turned away from me.

“Well, there’s always a second impression to get right,” I sighed at Lou, referring to me going to redeem myself for this.

Everyone laughed and Lou shooed them out so she could make a make-up regimen for Maisey.
