I stared at the girl in front of me, waiting with my hand outstretched for her to accept it and let me help. She would be scared, terrified at the prospect of facing her biggest fears,I know that. I just hope she'll try.
Glancing from my face to my hand, she tentatively put her soft hands on top of mine. My smile broadened. Baby steps. I pulled her to her feet and led her further towards the sea. Stopping a few steps short of actually being in the water, I turned to & Sapphire. She had so much apprehension in her expression that my eyes softened, trying to gently approach the matter.
I can't imagine how she does it, her whole world flipped upside down just because of one trip.
"Let's go for a swim."
There was a one second pause, a second she took to register the words, to react. And then her eyes widened, stepping back and pulling at her hand in mine. Apprehensiveness and uncertainty turned to fear so fast that I would've missed the transformation had I just blinked once. She shook her head frantically, trying to get me to release her hand, "No, no, no!"
"Saph-"
"No, no, I can't. Luke, please," her eyes welled up with tears as she begged to not make her do it. "Sapphire, I'll be-"
She didn't let me complete, shaking her head, "Please, I can't, Luke. I can't go in there."
"Hey, hey, Sapphire look at me," I cupped her face with both my hands and tilted her face up to me from its downward position, "I am not gonna let anything happen to you, okay?" I promised her but she still shook her head, "I'll be there with you, you won't be alone. I'll stay with you the whole time and I promise neither I nor anyone else will let anything happen to you."
From her expression, I could tell that she was gonna refuse again and so I tried again, "You won't have to get down in the water." She paused before glancing up at me, "You can get on my back and I'll get in the water. You won't have to get down, how about that?"
