The full moon was up in the sky, shinning down on the city. It was a typical spring night in Japan. Kagekao sat atop a building. At fifteen years of age, he was restless to go out and do something; yet he couldn't seem to find anything to do. Overlooking the city, he could see all around at the roads and assorted buildings. He wanted to go and play another one of his games with someone, but he couldn't seem to get in the mood.
Although Kage had lots of fun playing his deranged games with random people, something felt missing. He didn't really have any other person to truly call his friend. The only other demonic creature he knew of was a shinigami* named Scollex (*shinigami – Death God). Even though when first meeting Scollex Kage had wanted to become friends, it hadn't worked out and now they resented each other. He couldn't remember much from his childhood, he didn't know where is parents were; or if he even had parents, or if they were even alive.
A few times he has tried to actually be a real friend to normal people. Most of them were scared of him and fled. Others who never even found out that he was a demon just thought he was odd.
"寂しいね . . ." (Lonely . . .) Kage sighed and looked at the bright moon. He lied on his back and just looked at the many stars. Maybe he should just return home, he might be in the mood tomorrow. After lying there a while just gazing at the moon, Kage got up and stretched. He dusted himself off and got ready to head back home.
Suddenly Kage heard something that made him stop and grow alert. It was the sound of hastened footsteps, more than one person. Perhaps two people, running in the alley alongside the building he was on. Kage grew alert and climbed onto the side of the building; he climbed down to see what the commotion was. As the footsteps neared; he could hear one of the people shouting.
"おまえはかいぶつ!しね!" (You're a monster! Die!) The person shouted, and a gunshot was heard. Kage's excitement grew and he climbed along the wall faster, remaining in the shadows. He was about one story up when he saw the two people.
The first person looked a boy of about twelve years of age. He would of seemed normal at first, but instead of having normal nails he had sharp cat-like claws. Along with normal-seeming clothes he wore a Japanese fox mask. His pursuer was just a normal man, nothing too special about him from just looking at him. However, he was equipped with a handgun.
The boy in the fox mask ran down the alley, trying to escape. But to his horror it was a dead end. The man shot at him, and the boy jerked to the side; but the bullet grazed his arm, leaving a deep gash. Blood welled up from the open wound as the boy stumbled to the wall, he looked around desperately. After spotting a couple of trashcans he jumped behind them to hide. He knew the man had seen where he had gone, so he just curled up into a ball and awaited death.
The man knew there was nowhere left to run, so he slowed to a walk to go in for the kill.
"オイ!おまえ!" (Hey! You!) Kage shouted. The confused man looked up just in time to see the demon jump through the air and onto his back. He cried out in pain as Kage's claws dug into his flesh. The man rose to gun to shoot, but Kage slapped it out of his hand, and it fell to the ground. Kage pulled his black and white striped scarf off and wrapped it around the man's neck. With a quick jerk Kage ended the man's life and he fell to the ground limply.
Kage stood up and put his scarf back on. He slowly walked over to the trashcans. The boy was where he had last seen him; he was facing the wall and trembling with fear. Blood was still pouring from his arm.
"オイ?大丈夫か?" (Hey? Are you alright?) Kage crouched down to look at him eye to eye. The boy slowly looked up at him. They stared at each other silently. An annoyed face showed up on the white side of Kage's mask.
"I said: 大丈夫か?" (Are you alright?) Kage repeated, the boy still did not answer. "What? Are you like the other people? Just think I'm weird and want me to go away? I just saved your life狐人!" (Fox guy) The boy made a motion with one of his hands.
"え?" (Eh?) Kage stared at him, confused. The boy repeated the motion.
"え?" (Eh?) Kage continued to stare at him, confused. The boy pointed towards his own throat.
"What's wrong with your throat?" Kage asked. The boy was about to repeat the motion when he suddenly felt weak and leaned against the wall.
"Oh right! Your arm!" Kage helped him up. "Come with me, I'll help you with that." Kage began to lead him away.

They entered into the woods. After a short distance of walking, they came across an old house. Kage went up to it and opened the door, he led the boy inside.
"This is my house; クール, ね?" (Cool, huh?) Kage flipped on a light switch and the lights came on. "Pulled a few strings so electricity works here, ケケケー! Don't have to pay or anything!" (-Laughter-) Kage led him to the couch and sat him down.
"こっちにまて." (Wait here.) Kage left to another room. The boy looked around curiously; the room was not necessarily messy, but not exactly clean either; something that you might expect from someone who was living by themself. Kage came back into the room carrying some medical supplies.
After properly dressing the boy's wound, Kage tried again to get information from him.
"そう . . . おまえわ . .?" (So . . . you are . . ?) They just stared at each other again. "You're name is . . ?" Kage continued, just to get no reply. The boy motioned towards his throat, and then made an 'X' with his hands.
"What? You can't talk?" The boy nodded. "You're mute?" The boy nodded again. "Well then, how am I supposed to figure out your name?" Kage asked. The boy looked down sadly. Kage got an idea and got up; he found a pencil and paper and brought it over to him.
"Here! Write your name on this." Kage handed him the paper and pencil, but he just wrote on it 'No Name.'
Kage looked at the words questionably. "Well, what do your friends call you?" The boy just wrote the word 'None' on the paper. "Family?" The boy pointed to the word.
"Well . . . What do people call you then?" The boy thought for a moment, remembering his encounters with normal people. Then he wrote down 'They just shout 'Kaibutsu'*' (Kaibutsu - Monster)
"Can I just call you 'Kai' for short?" Kage asked. The boy nodded happily; he had finally gotten a name.
"I'm Kagekao, but you can just call me Kage-sama ケケケー!" Kai stared at him blankly. "Oh right . . . you're mute . . ."
"Ummm . . . Do you have a place to live?" Kai once again pointed to the word 'None' on the paper. "Well, it's kind of lonely here with just me . . . You want to stay? Well, at least until you find your own place?"
Kai nodded joyously in agreement. Kage smiled, seems like he finally had a friend.

It was a few days after Kage had met Kai. Now they were walking along a rooftop, Kage was teaching Kai a few tips on the 'dos and don'ts' of the city. Kai responded mostly with sign language, which Kage was trying to learn. They were looking out towards a parking lot, which was nearly empty. Kage saw a single man in the parking lot standing under a lamppost, and quickly pulled Kai down so they wouldn't be seen.
Kai made a gesture with his hand signaling that he was confused; Kage looked at the man in the parking lot, who had his back to them.
"You see that guy?" Kage pointed at the man "He's a shinigami." The man wore an all-white suit with a black shirt and white tie. Upon his head was a white fedora, and he has silvery white hair that was tipped with a deep inky black. Kai was confused; he looked like an ordinary person. Maybe a bit overdressed, but otherwise normal.
"His name is Scollex; he doesn't like me very much." The man turned around and on his face could be seen a white mask; covering his mouth was a metal plate.
"Yeah, I kind of messed up a few of his marks that he was going to go after. He wants revenge, but I'm too fast for him!" Kage laughed "Besides, I know his weakness. But seriously though, stay away from him." He backed away from the edge of the rooftop. "Let's go, I don't want him to see us." They both turned around to leave; unaware that Scollex was glaring at them.

It was now a few days later; Kai's arm was healing nicely, and he was out for a walk. It was a little cold, and Kai was wearing a gray hoodie lined with light beige fur that Kage had found. Kage was out looking around for people that they might be able to play with, so that he could teach Kai how to play too.
Kai was walking along in a vacant park; alone with the exception of a few animals here and there, and bugs flying around the lamps. Then footsteps were heard. Kai stopped and turned around to see no one, and the footsteps stopped. But when he continued walking, the sinister sound started again. Kai stopped again and turned around, and yet again the noise stopped, and there was no one there. For a third time, he started walking again, and the footsteps started again. But this time when he turned around, he became face to face with Scollex.
"マイ、マイ; これなに?" (My, my; What's this?)
Kai jumped back in fear and started to run, but Scollex shot out one of his hands quickly and grabbed him by the neck. His white gloved hand shifted into a dark purplish black clawed hand. Three pair of large wings sprouted from his back; one pair was bat-like, the next was white and black feathered, and the third was gray feathered. He lifted the struggling Kai off of the ground to look him in the eye.
"You're a friend of that annoying little Kage hmm? I saw you two the other day you know. I can never catch that little bastard, he's so agile." Scollex's other hand then shifted to the dark demonic form the other was in. "I've always wanted to get my revenge on him, but as you can tell by how he still has all his limbs; I never have. Oh well, I guess I can settle for just doing to you what I'd do to him."
Scollex lifted his other hand; large hooked claws appeared at the end of each finger. Kai began to strain harder, desperately trying to release himself from Scollex's grip.
"スコレクス!放して!" (Scollex! Release him!) An angry voice shouted out from afar. Kagekao came running out of the bushes, an enraged face showing on the white side of his mask. His claws were out at full length and ready to attack.
Scollex chuckled. "Well, seems like I can finally have my revenge then." He slowly tightened his grip, and Kai struggled and choked for breath. Kage's anger boiled as he came closer, but in his rage he forgot to dodge, and Scollex kicked him in the chest; sending him to the ground, gasping to try and get his breath back.
With a beat of his wings, Scollex entered the air, now levitating about a foot off of the ground. He went over to Kage. Scollex reached down to grab him in the same manner that he was holding Kai, but Kage regained his strength and got out of the way. Scollex didn't manage to grab Kage's neck, but he did manage to grab his mask. He pulled Kage closer, trying to get him close enough to quickly grab his neck. But Kage pulled his mask off and stumbled backwards.
Scollex threw the mask to the ground angrily and glared at Kage. Then he grinned behind his faceplate, and reached up his clawed hand and grabbed Kai's arm. Scollex sunk his claws into Kai's arm, red blood dripping down his arm.
"オレはおまえ殺す!!" (I'll kill you!!) Kage ran forward with his claws out. Scollex whipped around one of his large white and black feathered wings and slashed it across Kage's face; the edges of the primary feathers were rough, and they cut well. Kage fell back, a large gash stretched across his face. Blood poured out and dripped down and onto the ground. Kage stumbled to get up, but Scollex whipped around his wing again and slashed his across his cheek. Blood sprayed into the air and Kage fell on his back, gasping.
Scollex chuckled, looking down at Kage. He reached down with one of his bat wings and stuck him again, and Kage writhed in pain. He reached down to do so again; but Kage gathered up his strength and dodged. Then Kage turned and fled into the shadows.
"ハ! このがき! As cowardly as he is agile!" (Ha! That brat!) Scollex turned back to Kai. "Guess I'll have to deal with him later; but for now, let's see what we can do with you."
Kai struggled in vain, but then he noticed something. There was a lamppost nearby, someone perched on top of it.
"オイ! ここにいるよ!" (Hey! Up here!) Scollex looked up, only to have Kage jump from the lamppost onto his back. In shock, Scollex released his grip and Kai fell to the ground.
Kage hissed angrily, blood still flowing down his face. He kept trying to reach down and grab Scollex's mask.
"いや! やめて! そのことをやめて!" (No! Stop! Stop doing that!) Scollex shouted, he tried to grab Kage, but Kage dodged and Scollex ended up pulling out a handful of his own feathers. Scollex stretched out his wings and then brought them down hard on Kage's back, pummeling him mercilessly to try and get him off. Kage kept his grip, although the savage beating of the wings was causing him to choke up blood.
Kage finally managed to grab Scollex's mask, he pulled it off of his face; exposing Scollex's highly sensitive eyes.
"くそ! You little bastard!!" (Sh-t!) Scollex quickly covered his face with his wings. Gathering up his strength, Kage managed to pull away the wings. Then he grabbed Scollex's head and pointed his eyes towards the light of the lamppost.
Scollex shrieked in agony as his eyes began to seemingly glow, and then burn. With his eyes, the rest of him seemed to burn and dissolve into a thick purplish black smoke. Kage fell off of him and onto the ground, and Scollex writhed and twisted, still letting out that horrible shriek. Finally there was nothing left of him but a few black and white feathers left on the ground, but those too soon dissolved into smoke.
"ケケケー! I told you I . . . I knew his . . . his weakness . . . I did that once before . . . probably why he hates me . . ." Kage laughed weakly "Don't get too comfortable though. That was only temporary, he'll . . . he'll be back . . ." Kage began to cough again, blood coming from his mouth.
Kai got up and ran over to Kage, trying to help him up. Kage remained on the ground, trying to laugh.
"Don't worry about me . . . I'm alright . . . Just need to lie down for a little bit . . . Just need to . . . ケケ . . ." Kage passed out.
* * *
Kage woke up. His face was covered in bandages. When he looked around he realized that he was in his own house. He saw his mask lying next to him. Kai walked into the room and saw that Kage was awake. The mood around him seemed to change to joy and he ran over and gave Kage a hug.
"Hey Kai, you okay?" Kage struggled to sit up, his back still hurting. Kai nodded. "This may be a bit off topic, but I was wondering; do you want to stay here? Like we can be roommates or something? You don't have a place to live and-" Before Kage could finish Kai nodded rapidly and gave him another hug.
Kage smiled, he wasn't so lonely anymore.
