Chapter 9.

Memories; they came in all sorts of ways. Some were beautiful, something to be remembered and cherished for years to come. Some were traumatizing, things that were longed to be forgotten, but stayed. And yet still, some were just small fragments of scenes from one's life.

They were like small video clips that played in one's mind briefly.

Kagekao reached out his claws and sunk them into the bark of a tree. He pulled himself upward, climbing higher. From the ground, Kurai watched his son. Finally, he reached the highest branch of the moderately sized tree.
'I did it!' He shouted proudly, but then foolishly fell. His father reached out and caught him before he hit the ground.
'You know you're supposed to keep your claws unsheathed, right?' Kurai asked the young demon. Kage laughed, embarrassed.

They seemed small, maybe even insignificant; but they were so much more.

'お母さん、見て!からすが巻き込ました!' (Mom, look! I caught a crow!) Kage ran over to his mother, holding a large black bird in his hands.
'Do you think we can cook it or something?' The black bird cawed madly and flapped out its wings, releasing itself out of Kage's grip. It flew away angrily, leaving behind a few loose feathers.
'Probably should have killed it first, huh.' Kage stared at the fleeing bird, his mother laughed.

They were little memories that were somehow so special; something to hold close to your heart.

'I think you're finally old enough to visit the city, Kage. You want to?' Kurai asked Kage.
Kage smiled up at his father, 'Yeah!'

Once regained after being lost, they seemed so much better.

'Stay away from the humans for now; they can be very dangerous when they want to be.' Kurai informed his son as they walked into the dark city, it was Kage's first time visiting the odd place.
'They don't seem so tough!' Kage flexed his hands, showing off his large black claws that resembled his father's. 'They don't have awesome claws like these, but we do!'

Memories were all you had once a moment had passed; they're your own treasures and burdens to hold.

Now, in a room mostly used for storage, Kage and Yuki sat on the floor. Yuki pulled up one of the floorboards, and then another, and another; revealing a secret compartment underneath them. Inside this compartment were boxes and tins. She reached down and pulled one out. Opening it, she revealed that inside were many photos and pictures of them.
'Why do you keep the pictures down there?' Kage asked, looking into the hole in the floor.
'Photos are very special; they are windows to memories, and memories are your own special treasures to keep.'

Photos . . . under the floorboards . . .

Kage slowly opened his eyes. He blinked them a couple of times to focus, and saw that he was staring into another one's eyes. He opened and closed his eyes several more times to make sure he could properly see who he was looking at.

He was looking into small, beady black eyes; the beady black eyes of Kiba the coral snake, who was lying on his chest and staring at him intently. The venomous serpent flicked out its forked tongue at him, its reptilian face emotionless.

Kage stared at the snake, who stared back; then Kage looked over at his surroundings. He was lying on a blanket on the ground. He saw that he was wrapped in bandages, and he saw a small pile of discarded bloody bandages next to him.

He looked over and spotted Doku, who was standing near him; but faced away. Doku also had on several bandages, but not nearly as much. He was looking forlornly at the large Okinawan habu as she coiled herself up the leg of an old table and made her way to the top of it.

"You know, I thought people used leeches; not snakes." Kage remarked, trying to lighten the mood.

Doku jumped a little at the sudden talking, but was overjoyed when he saw that Kage was awake.

"Kage!" Doku went over to him, "You're still alive!"

"Of course I am." Kage said with a slightly arrogant tone, he tried to sit up.

Doku took the coral snake off of him.

"I thought you were going to die, and then I'd be alone again . . ." Doku's voice trailed off sadly.

"What about these guys?" Kage motioned towards the snakes. "You said they were friends."

"Well . . . they are, but in a different way . . . can't really talk to them like I could with others." Doku paused in thought. "But you, that was amazing! How did you do that!?"

"Eh?"

"You were just kind of dead, and then you got up and killed all of them!"

"Oh yeah, that was pretty epic wasn't it?"

"It was!"

"Well, I had some encouragement . . ." Kage thought about the photo of his parents. Then about where it came from; he could remember much more memories now. He could remember his parents, and events that took place, and things like that. But even with these recovered memories, he didn't have all of his memories back. He still couldn't remember how or why they had gotten separated, but he could remember that they did indeed care for him.

"Doku?"

"Yeah?"

"Could we go back to the house in the woods again?"

"Sure, I'd be happy to take you there." Doku smiled, glad that his friend was doing better. "When?"

"Preferably as soon as possible."

"But, you're heavily injured."

"I can manage." Kage tried to stand up, but several sharp pains caused him to sit down again.

"あ、まて . . . できない." (Ah, wait . . . I can't.)

"In a few days, then?"

"Yeah." Kage lied back down.
