To say Pokémon has grown on me is somewhat of an understatement. It's been maybe a year since I really got into it, and I have to say, I've had a blast. I've finally started to really enjoy myself and the series. Given how annoying school has gotten and my total lack of wanting to think about starting to look at jobs.. It gave me a good sense of escapism from my usual problems.
So.. I'm sure if you've heard me before, though, that's a bit surprising to hear given my past experience with my copy of Pokémon Gold.
For those unaware, I had a bit of an incident when trying to get one of my ace Pokémon to turn shiny by using a glitch with the coin case. Said Pokémon had disappeared after trying it three times.. Then my rival, who I named ???, gave me a good freak out for it - seeming to move on his own, and asking me some really weird questions, before initiating a battle with me and my under-levelled team of Pokémon I was using to perform other glitches. It seemed he had stolen my Pokémon.. Which not only was not shiny, but seemed to be fundamentally corrupted.
With me severely freaked out and losing the battle, my Rival would give Maya, the Houndoom in question that went missing, back to me. Using homebrew tech from a friend of mine I transferred her and some other Pokémon I enjoyed using to my newer copy of FireRed. Since then, I haven't laid a finger on that Gameboy Color. Between that and the fact nobody I tell at school believes a word I said.. I tried to move on, and forget about it.
But I still can't seem to get over the weirdest part..
Maya hasn't changed at all from when she looked all glitchy and corrupted, during my fight with him. Even now, while she's in a whole new game. Her color palette is completely wrong.
I've recently been playing through FireRed (Legitimately, of course. I already learned not to cheat. So I'm not going through that shit again if I can help it.)
I managed to get through a lot of the game on my own, seeing as I've gotten a little better at the game's mechanics. I'm obviously not a professional considering I still forget what certain types Pokémon are and as a result get one-shot by super effective stuff.
Now, I had gotten pretty far in the game when I had decided to check my boxes. I had Maya set into my first box. I had used her a bit at the start but after noticing some odd things about how the game behaved when she was used in a Trainer fight, I decided to avoid using her in general.
Since then, she had been sitting in my box for a while as I played through the game with a regular team. I looked in the box every now and again, of course, and didn't seem to notice too much being wrong while she was there. Sometimes I would take Maya out to do some random encounter training with her - or at least to help one-shot any encounters I got when I didn't feel like buying more repels. Usually I'd try to fill up my Pokédex with her in my party. Maybe it's dumb, but I wanted to at least make sure it didn't seem like I'd given her up after what happened.
This time, though - something wasn't really right. I could have sworn my box was full the last time I had checked on it, but for some reason there seemed to be some Pokémon missing from inside. They weren't any of my higher level ones, so I wasn't torn up about it or anything, but it did strike me as concerning.. So, I decided to take Maya out, for now.
Things seemed... Normal at first. Maya works just fine aside from her sprite being messed up when we fight random encounters, and she makes the travel through certain routes a bit more safe - she's really powerful so I don't really need to worry about potentially whiting out from anything. I just needed to avoid trainer fights if I wanted to keep the game running as smoothly as possible.
