Chapter 12

*Josh's POV*

I was trying to get this straight, but I couldn't comprehend it.

"What? This has to be some kind of mistake" I said out loud.

Whitney's head bobbed up and down as we pulled into the driveway. All the lights were off in the house, so I went and knocked on the door. There was obviously no answer. I trotted back to my car and opened the door where Whitney was sitting with her head slightly tilted to the side. I think she was drooling a little. I wiped her face with my sleeve and took her out of the back seat. I knew where the extra house key was, so I carried her bridal style up to her front porch. I was just about to take the key out of the flowerpot until I noticed the light over the door turned on. I didn't know there was someone standing there the whole time.

"Um, hey" I said nervously "there's something wrong..."

I looked closer and realized that the person standing there wasn't her brother. In fact, it was a woman.

"I'm sorry, does Mason Brown still live here?" I asked the woman

"Yes he does" she said "I'll get him for you"

"Thank you" I said.

The woman walked back inside and came out of the house a few seconds later, accompanied by Mason.

"What's wrong" Mason said rubbing his eyes, then he got a glimpse of his sister.

He ran down the stairs and pulled his sister out of my arms.

"What happened? What did you do to her?" He tried to turn this on me.

"Nothing! The last thing I heard her say was she wanted to see you! That's why I brought her here." I tried to keep my voice low.

"We should bring her inside" the woman said.

Mason looked at his sister, then at me, and then at the woman.

"Okay"

I followed them into the house, but kept my distance. I watched Mason gently lay his sister on the couch and examine her. I was totally zoned out until I heard a friendly voice behind me.

"I'm Lori by the way" she said

I shook my head to try and snap back into reality.

"I'm Josh" I said

She stretched out her arm, so I took her hand and gave it a friendly shake. Lori was a pretty girl. She was tall and had glasses that suited her. She also had long brown hair with a tint of blond. Her bangs were straight across, but over to the side a little.

"So I'm guessing you're the boyfriend?" She asked

"Mhm" I replied "I'm not the one for a great first impression, as you can see."

"I see" she said sarcastically "you seem like a good guy though, Josh"

"You too" I said, not realizing that I called her a guy. "I mean girl"

I feel like an idiot because I called her a guy, and I totally forgot her name.

"Nervous Josh?" She said and then touched my arm.

"No" I gulped. "I'm just a little confused"

"About what?" She asked, and rubbed my arm in a comforting-mom kind of way.

I shifted uncomfortably

"The for sale sign on the lawn" I said

"Oh. Me and Mason are moving" she said.
