The morning didn't start off the best. Jen accidentally set the motel alarm clock to PM, which meant I had to rush to get ready. Thankfully, we were only a few minutes late. The car ride to school was quiet, the anticipation hanging heavy in the air. Before I knew it, we had arrived, though we had to park quite a distance away due to the lack of empty spaces.
Once we made it to the front office, a friendly woman greeted us.
"How can I help you?" she asked with a warm smile.
"Hi! I'd like to enroll my sibling in school here," Jen said.
"Of course! All I need are a few documents: your sibling's birth certificate, mail with their name on it, proof that you are their legal guardian, and residency."
"I only have three of those. We just got here last night," Jen replied, glancing at me.
"It's okay; I'll see if I can work some magic to get your sibling enrolled," the woman said reassuringly.
"Thank you so much!" Jen exclaimed.
"Oh, it's no problem at all. My name is Gale," she said, extending her hand.
Jen shook it first. "I'm Jen," she said, and I followed suit. "Y/N."
Gale took the documents Jen handed her and began setting up my schedule. "In the meantime, you can take a seat over there," she gestured to a couple of chairs behind us.
We settled down, and a few minutes later, the door opened. It was Phillip, the guy from the gas station.
"Sorry I'm late, Miss Sanders. I had to work a double shift again," he said, sounding exhausted.
Gale sighed, shaking her head. "It's alright, Phillip. I understand your situation. Let me get you a late pass real quick."
She rummaged through her desk until she found the passes and quickly wrote one for him.
When Gale returned, she handed me my schedule. "At this school, there are eight classes, but you only attend four each day. Today is B-day, so you'll go to classes two, four, six, and eight. Everyone is currently in homeroom. Phillip can help you find your way after he gets his pass."

After Phillip walked me to my homeroom, he didn't say much other than, "Here's your homeroom." I stepped inside and was greeted by the teacher, who directed me to an empty desk in the middle of the room. The noise level was higher than I expected; students were chatting amongst themselves. Anxiety bubbled up in my chest. I wished I didn't have to move. Why couldn't my parents wait until the school year was over, or at least until I graduated?
The bell rang, signaling the start of first period. I grabbed my backpack and schedule, determined to find my next class. After a bit of wandering, I finally spotted the right room. A woman stood outside, and I approached her.
"Hey, I'm new. I just transferred here today."
"Hi there! I'm Ms. Morgan," she replied, looking into the classroom. "There's an open seat next to Todd—he has orange hair and glasses."
"Okay, thanks." I walked to the desk and sat down, putting my bag on the ground beside me. It was freezing in the classroom.
The bell rang again, and Ms. Morgan stepped in to begin the lesson. I felt lost; the class was far ahead of what I had learned back home. Confused, I sat there until she assigned us to work with a partner.
I turned to the guy next to me. "Do you know anything about what she just talked about?"
"Need help?" he asked.
