"You're gonna get caught staring at people's asses."

I chuckled to myself as a yelp of terror filled my ears. "Jesus fucking christ! You scared the shit out of me, man!" I smirked as my best friend hopped off the break room table, giving me a death glare from his brown eyes. "And I wasn't staring at anyone's ass, for your information. I was trying to see how blue the pool was."

I stared straight at him.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet my annoying best friend and brother from another mother of nearly 18 years, Tre Madsen. Ever as flirtatious and a pain in my ass as he was, I couldn't deny the bond and friendship we shared.

"Whatever, loser. Don't lie to yourself," I clicked my teeth, running a hand through my ash-purple hair. "I just came to tell you that I'm going back on shift," I reached up to take my shirt off, ready to tan underneath my umbrella with the scorching rays of light peeking through. "Ooh, what a hot bod you got there," Tre wiggled his eyebrows, stretching his nasty grin on his brown face. "Are you trying to seduce me, Kieran? Oh my," He teased and I stared at him, plotting his death.

"Sleep with two eyes open tonight, Tre."

I reached over to grab my water bottle, flicking him on the head as I made my exit out of the clubhouse breakroom.

I couldn't deny that Tre was an ignorant ass idiot who said what he wanted and did what he wanted, but I was an even more ignorant ass idiot because no matter what he said or did, I was right there beside him.

Oh my god, what have I done?

"I'll be thinking of you in my daydreams, Mr. Strong!" Tre called out after me with a high-pitched voice and I internally cringed, wondering why Ciara Madsen decided to give birth to this child of an adult.

As I felt a trickle of sweat come down my temple, I looked to my right and saw a party of essential businesspeople cheering to a speech with drinks in their hands, looking as expensive as they could in their pompous and bougie bathing suits.

I mean, how can you look bougie in a bathing suit, for fuck's sake?

They tried, they really did, and they succeeded in looking as gaudy and preppy. I rolled my eyes but smiled nonetheless at the people that passed by. Part of me wanted to imagine what that feeling felt that, to cheer to something special with everyone around me, but there was no need.

Sigh.

I reached my post and started to climb up the stairs to my seat. I sat down all nice and comfy, putting on my sunglasses to observe the environment.

At 23 years old, one might wonder, why are you a lifeguard when it pays so little? I had all the answers to that, and then some. I was a graduate student, studying physical therapy in fact, and this job paid 24 an hour for 8 hours a day. It was fun because I sat under my umbrella, watching all of the rich people swim and float about, knowing that they didn't need me that much.

That's right.

I worked at a community pool that was dedicated to the rich and wealthy of Beverly Hills. All of the high class as well as famous people came here to relax, swim, and gossip, and I was witness to it all. It was a really chill job.

That and there were so many perks that came with the job. If anyone needed me, I could heal any injury or give forms of therapy for their muscles and such. It gave me clients and experience for my future clinic. They seemed to like that I offered that, so I took what I could get.

I sighed as the nostalgic smell of chlorine wafted into my nostrils, giving me the sensation of sweet summer memories. The pools here were a sight to see. The country club really did well with the aesthetic. I mean with the large, deep pools with waterfalls in the center of the area, an infinity pool, and a jacuzzi taking up the rest, it really was well planned.
