"Peter?" MJ cleared her throat as she looked at him, drowsy eyes slowly closing again. "You okay?"
How was he supposed to answer that? Of course he wasn't okay. In fact, he was horrified. His relationship with MJ had gotten closer than he initially wanted, and now he was scared it would all crumple to the ground in a cloud of smoke.
"MJ I—" Peter looked at her with a terrified expression, his eyes flickering between hers.
"I know.. dumb question. Obviously you aren't okay. I wouldn't be either." She giggled, scratching her thumb. "He's not gonna... come after you or me... will he?"
"I mean... I haven't seen him since— you know. I don't know what he'll do." MJ's expression softened as Peter turned back to look at her again. "MJ um... look I know that we are pretty good friends right now and this thing between us is going well but—"
"I know." She hummed, rubbing his shoulder as he stared at her, watching her smile with a broken heart. "I understand. Keep me safe, Y'know? I'm probably not as strong as Gwen was.. she sounded pretty damn strong but.. I can still keep myself safe, Tiger."
"It's not that I don't want to stop anything between us..." Peter whispered as she nodded.
"It's okay. If anything, Harry wouldn't even know we were talking other than just the occasional, awkward Hello's passing by in the hallway." Was she supposed to tell Peter she knew him? That they had once been friends?
His expression didn't change. "I just don't want to make the same mistake again. I want my friends.. my family, to always be safe." MJ nodded in understanding, yawning softly.
"You're a good guy, Peter. You know that, right?"
"You're change of topics while drunk is amazing." Peter chuckled as she hummed.
"I do my best." She yawned again, her head falling onto his shoulder slowly. Peter stiffened, his arms raised up slightly as he was unsure of what to do in this situation.
He tried to move her off of him, lay her down on the couch but she was resistant for a moment before going limp as she fell asleep. Peter sighed quietly, lifting her up with ease and walking her to the bedroom.
"Goodnight, MJ." She whispered, shutting off any lights in her apartment before walking out.
Peter froze as he heard the elevator ding, praying to whatever god existed that it was a new neighbor as his eyes squinted tightly.
"It's all in my head. I'm imagining things. It's not Harry. It's not Harry—" Peter ran into his apartment when the hallway door started to open, closing it shut quietly and locking the door.
His heart pounded out of his chest as he slowly turned to look through the peep hole, his breath stuck in his throat as he listened to the footsteps getting closer to his door.
Peter's brows furrowed in confusion when a hooded man paused in front of the door, slowly turning to Peter's. He didn't recognize the man, but he sure did look menacing.
"Mary Jaaane? I know you're in there." He banged on Peter's door and he flinched back. He waited a few moments before slowly opening it.
"Who the hell are you?" The man scowled as Peter cleared his throat.
"Definitely not a Mary Jane." He answered quickly.
"Where is she?"
"Where's who?"
"Don't be a fucking idiot, kid! Where's Mary Jane?!" He yelled as Peter raised a hand in defense.
"Sorry man I don't know a Mary Jane." He lied, though apparently the man had believed him. He clicked his tongue, nodding slowly.
"Well... if she is where I think she's is and you ever see her. Tell her her boyfriend is lookin for her." Boyfriend? She doesn't have— oh.
"Uh.. will do, sir." Peter tried to smile as the man slowly walked away.
Peter watched the man leave, his hand trembling with nerves.
At least it wasn't Harry, right?
