Ayobami sat staring at her phone. At this point, she didn't see the point of being surprised whenever anyone did anything. But she always gave too much of herself in friendships and often got nothing in return. She hardly reaped what she sowed in friendships, rather situations always became sour.

Her mind was clouded.

A year ago it was Bukola that said she couldn't be friends with her anymore.

She still remembered that day crystal clear.

She had damaged her knee and was infamous among her classmates, and not receiving love from home either, Bukola was the emotional support she had.

But instead of support, it was withdrawal.

She ignored her. She didn't respond to her greetings. She never came to see her.

The last string that was keeping her afloat capsized once Bukola said she couldn't be friends with her anymore because people didn't like their friendship.

They were best friends for three years prior to this.

And a week ago, Gift said these exact same words but to make matters worse, it wasn't to her face. She said it behind her back but as usual, the news came back to her.

And today, it was Chidi uttering those same words, only in his own way. It wasn't something she hadn't heard before.

It made her mind spiral.

Everything people and supposed friends said about her started to resurface.

"Don't talk while human beings are talking."

"Giving birth to you was a mistake for your parents."

"I will make you regret ever living in the first place."

"We can't be friends, because of you, other people don't want to be friends with me."

"Everything is always your fault."

"You're a bad person."

That is all she heard all her life. From kindergarten, all the way to the twelfth grade.
