January 14, 2022, Weekend Write-in prompt: Stretch
Hey Mama
I wish
Wished and wished and wished
Coaxed, cajoled, prayed
Now you're gone
I was desperate to stretch time
Needed more of those bittersweet hospice moments
Promised you that my love was big enough to cover
The indignities of your disease
"Heaven bound," you said
And then you were gone
When it's my turn
I wish for love and grit and grace
Like yours
To eclipse my children's grief
With cherished memories and no regrets
After I'm gone
Held your hand long past cold
Couldn't say goodbye
See you later, Mama, love you
Wish you were here
