"This way, Mommy!" Sarah demanded, dragging Meredith toward another tank in the Seattle aquarium.
At three years old, Sarah Shepherd was a beautiful and brilliant young girl. Though she adored Derek, she wanted nothing more than to be just like her mother. Meredith was, without question, the girl's idol.
Meredith couldn't help but laugh as they came to a stop in front of the tank which housed the sea turtles, "The turtles are my favorite."
"I know, Mommy! They're my favorite, too," Sarah grinned.
Derek carefully maneuvered the stroller he was pushing over to his wife and daughter. He smiled widely as he took in the scene before him. His two favorite girls were mesmerized by the majestic creatures on the other side of the glass.
A little whimper from the front of the stroller gained both Meredith and Derek's attention. Glancing at their watches, they assured themselves that it wasn't feeding time, and there had been a diaper change too recently for that to be the problem. The whimper turned to a fuss and Meredith quickly scooped the baby out of his stroller and into her arms.
Michael Shepherd had arrived five months earlier and was a bit of a surprise. The spitting image of his father, he fit into their little family seamlessly. Sarah had been excited for the baby, and was proving to be an excellent big sister thus far. Michael had been named after Derek's father, a beautiful tribute which made all the Shepherd women emotional.
"You're okay little man," Meredith whispered lovingly, kissing his little head.
Michael calmed down almost immediately. She smiled at him and he offered her a gummy grin before settling against her shoulder and gripping a golden wave of her hair.
"Mommy, what's wrong with Mikey?" Sarah asked, tugging on the hem of Meredith's shirt.
"He just wanted a hug, Sarah," Meredith assured her.
"Your mommy is a baby whisperer, Sarah. He's fine now," Derek joked, scooping Sarah up and tickling her a bit. The young girl giggled uncontrollably.
"Daddy, today is so fun," she beamed.
"Would it be even more fun if we got ice cream?" Derek asked.
"Yes!" Sarah exclaimed, hugging him tightly at the mere suggestion.
Meredith sighed happily as she watched them interact, snuggling Michael a little closer. Derek was the perfect father and he insisted that she was a super mom. Thing weren't always easy, but together they made it through. Her children were happy, healthy, and loved. That was all she'd ever wanted for them.
"You ready to go, Mer?" Derek smiled.
"Yeah, I'm ready," she nodded, reaching for his hand.
