Ethan
I squinted out the window. There seemed to be a flickering light about a kilometre away, almost like a fire. I shook my head and turned away. Why would there be a fire at ten o'clock on the beach.
I sighed and flopped down on my bed. Dinner had been a nightmare. Of course Jake didn't show up. I somehow managed to get the blame by making the excuse that I forgot to call him. My temperature and breathing increased as my temper raged, just from thinking about Jake and his despicable behaviour. He was such a man whore. Who sleeps with someone the first time you meet them? I don't know what I'm going to do when he gets back here tomorrow. The thought of beating him up was oddly satisfying but I knew I could never do that. He was way stronger than me.
God. This stuff was making my head spin. I quickly sat up and threw on a pair of converse. After dinner mum had gone to bed. Even though she said she wasn't, I knew she was upset about Jake. The house was pretty quiet, apart from the occasional snore coming from her room.
I tiptoed down the stairs and into the kitchen. I unlocked the back door and made my way outside, careful not to close it properly. I needed a way to get back in.
I took a deep breath and then slowly let it out again, a smile making its way onto my face, replacing the angry scowl. I could feel my shoulders relax as the tension seemed to melt away.
I'd always loved the sea. It was so calming and peaceful, especially when watching the rhythmic waves making their way up the shore and then slowly back out. In and out, in and out.
Ever since I was little, I would always come down to the beach when I had an argument or was feeling stressed. I could leave the house a raging bull and return a calm lamb. Mom knew this and usually tried to move to a seaside town when we had to move.
I wandered aimlessly along the beach and sat down near the sea. The gentle lulling of waves was comforting and I could feel my shoulders relax even further as the rest of the tension left my body. I glanced around me, spotting the flickering light again. It seemed bigger now.
I stood up and started walking towards it. As I got closer I could hear the sound of people talking and laughing. They were sitting in a circle around a bonfire and drinking beer. Typical teenage behaviour. I dismissed them and walked back to the shore, staring out into the never ending black sky and sea.
Suddenly my ears pricked up as I heard someone nearby. My eyes swivelled to the left until I caught sight of a girl about one hundred metres away. I heard her sigh as she clumsily sat down, her legs pulled in to her chest and her head resting on her knees. As I stared at her I took in her appearance.
White skinny jeans hugged her bottom half while her top half was covered in a loose and casual off the shoulder top. Her brown corkscrew curls cascaded down her back with the front pinned back. She had hints of blond here and there and I gazed at them mesmerised. Why would someone put bits of a different colour in their hair. That didn't make any sense to me. Women didn't make any sense to me. Ever since Dad left, I didn't talk to anyone. Talking to girls was even harder. There was no one to give me advice about it. Jake would just tease me if I told him I'd never had sex before. He thought sex was the ultimate achievement and that it 'made you more of a man' if you were doing it on a regular basis.
I took a deep breath and walked over to her.
"Hi. Can I help you?"
She whipped around, as if I had startled her. As I looked into her sapphire blue eyes, I cursed myself. What was I doing talking to someone. And a girl of all people. I was supposed to lay low and pretend I was invisible. Dammit.
"Oh hi. Sorry did I disturb you," she replied, a puzzled look coming across her perfect facial features.
"N-no. You just seemed lost."
Damn I stuttered. She probably thought I was a freak or something. Well, I was but I didn't want this angel of a person to know that.
"No I'm fine," she replied before going back to staring at the sea. I slowly sat down beside her, still looking at her. I was trying to memorise her face, but it wasn't that hard. She had the kind of face you remember for a long time. I slowly and reluctantly turned my head back to the sea, enjoying the quite lapping of the waves. The view of the sea suddenly seemed dull in comparison to the goddess beside me.
A peaceful silence started to fall, the one you only get when you know someone well. How odd.
An uproar was heard coming from the bonfire before I heard the police sirens in the background. The girl beside me whipped her head around in fear. I cursed. I hadn't even done anything wrong and I was gonna get a warning.
I glanced back at the bonfire and saw her friends had deserted her. She was alone with a blazing fire and beer bottles scattered around the place. I grabbed her hand and ignored the spark that jumped to life when our skin made contact.
"Come on! We gotta get out of here!" I yelled, while pulling her after me. She stumbled behind as I ran back to my house. The house was deserted but I could already hear the police sirens getting closer. I quickly bundled her into the house and shut the door, breathing heavily.
It was only in the dark, with our chests heaving together did I realise how out of character this was for me. I pulled away as if she had been burned and turned my back to her.
"Y-you should go," I muttered, cursing myself yet again. Three times in a short space of time. What was this girl doing to me.
"O-ok. Thanks for your help," she said.
I stayed with my back to her until I heard the back door gently click shut. I released a sigh that I didn't know I was holding and crept up the stairs. Stripping out of my clothes, I slid into my bed. As soon as I closed my eyes I could feel myself drifting off until my thoughts landed on her. All of a sudden, I wasn't tired anymore.
"God this was annoying" I thought. I groaned and tossed around, trying to stop myself overthinking and actually get some sleep.Author's Note: So sorry about the late update!
