There had never been such adrenaline pulsing through Phil's body. All of his mind could think of where Dan could be going. Surely he would try cutting before he just ended his life, right? So there was still time? The older one knew that his phone was useless. Dan would never pick up after what had just happened.

The thing was that Phil didn't know if he loved him. He'd always looked at Dan as, well--just Dan. If Phil had any feelings for him, he had probably pushed them away. Unfortunately, he couldn't explain this to his friend. He'd let him go, which was one of the single most stupid things he'd ever done.

He spent hours looking around town. He spent hours running to every place that Dan would go and found him nowhere. It was starting to get dark.

Something was terribly wrong.

Hours later, Phil ran up the side of the road. There was figure. He was just standing there, wind blowing through his hair.  He grew closer and saw him stand up on the railing. Phil stopped running; there was no way he'd make it in time. He had no choice but to stand and watch him.

Dan stood there for a second, and then carefully turned around and dropped something on the ground. Then he turned back around and looked down at the water below him and then the starry sky above him.

It was perfect. He could just disappear. There wasn't a single person in sight.

Phil's lungs burned, his sides ached, his mind was spinnig, his heart aching. He felt none of it.

He watched Dan step off. It wasn't a jump. It was just a light step, enough to send him flying over the edge.

"DAN!"

He ran forward to where his friend was just standing. He looked down into the water and saw nothing. There were no signs of life. He was just gone. Like he never existed.

In the dead of the night, Phil let out a heart-wrenching scream. He kicked the side of the bridge and screamed again. Then he screamed so many times that he lost time. He didn't know how long he was there, just standing and screaming.

Then, after he stopped, there was silence. The only sound was a gentle breeze and the water rushing beneath him.

"I love you," he whispered, leaning over the edge of the bridge.

"I love you," Phil repeated. He said it louder that time.

There were a few minutes of nothing but silence. The silence suffocated Phil.

There was a beep from his pocket. He got his phone out and looked at it.

Message from: Dan

I love you.

How could Dan have been sending that?  Phil closed the text and called 999. Maybe there was still time left. Maybe he wasn't really dead yet.

They pulled Dan's body out of the river slightly past 11 at night. He was cold. His lips were blue. Phil  wrapped him in a hug and whispered to him that he loved him.

Because he did.
