During these four years of high school, I knew two things about Elliot Saengchan.
One, he usually sat at the back of the classroom, and two, he didn't talk much.
Today, as our hands touched while reaching for the same book in the school library, I learned one more thing. He wore glasses sometimes, and he looked really cute in them.
"Sorry, I didn't see you" I said, taking a step back and pointing to the book that started this all. "You can borrow it first." Although I was disappointed that I'd have to wait longer to find out how the series ended, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Elliot was into the HEART & DRAGONS series too. Romance-fantasy isn't generally a genre you'd find a teen boy reading.
With a gentle smile, he adjusted his glasses, before grabbing the book from the shelf. "Thanks, but I read it already. I just needed to get this back," he said, pulling out a bookmark from between the pages. His eyes sparkled with joy, as if he had just found a lost treasure.
"Must have been important," I remarked at his sweet reaction. "Yeah, it is," he confirmed, his voice full of sincerity and fondness as if he was sharing an intimate secret with me. Charmed by his honesty, I could only smile. I rarely got nervous, but there was something about Elliot that made my heart race.
"Here," he offered, handing me the book. "Thanks," I said, taking a step forward to reach for it, but before I could, he pulled the book back. Confused, I could only laugh it off. "Did you forget something else in there?" I joked.
With a soft chuckle, he shook his head. "No, but..." he trailed, shaking the book gently in his hands, "I don't think you should read it."
Even more confused now, I laughed again. I came into the library today to borrow a book, but I never thought that a cute boy would be stopping me from that. "And why not?" I asked, as I walked closer to him and the book in his hand.
With a sheepish smile, he explained, "I don't think you'll like how it ends."
Even though this was the first time we had met, I found myself believing and trusting in his words. Maybe he was right, but I was sure that this book would be the start of our story.
