I stood in the lunch line, not too excited about the school's hot lunch. Dad usually packs my lunch, but he forgot today since he had to pack an extra one today for Alex. Charlie will probably give me something from his packed lunch, though. The line moves forward a bit, and eventually I get close to the front. There's a long table that has fruit, beans, chips, the main meal(which is sloppy joes)and milk. I decice to get the fruit and chips to go along with the sloppy joes. I grab strawberry milk and head down to the cafeteria. This was our first year that we could eat in the cafeteria, and I wasn't super happy about it because it'll be loud and there will be a lot of people around me...I think we can choose our seats though! I walk through the wooden double doors and spot Charlie. Aaron Burr is sitting across from him, and the rest of the kids I don't know. Charlie seems to though.
"Yeah! So I- oh hey, John! Come sit down!" Charles greets me, patting the spot next to him. I put my tray down on the table and swing my legs over the bench.
"Were you just talking to Burr?" I whisper to Charlie.
"Yes I was, Aaron isn't that bad. He's not my favorite person, but he's not terrible." Charlie whispers back, opening up his lunch bag. I look over at Burr. He has his nose in a book, like always. He looks up, seeing me staring and glares at me. I scowl at him. Suddenly, a girl with black curly hair wearing a peach fluffy dress comes running over.
"Hey, you! The boy with the curly ponytail!" She yells, pointing at me. I'm a little taken aback, I don't even know who this girl is.
"Oh uhhh, h-hello?" I say, confusion in my voice.
"Hi!! I just want to say I really like your hair!! I have super curly hair too!!" She explains, her face lit up with joy.
"Oh, uh, thanks! That means a lot." I reply truthfully. I used to get bullied for my long hair when I was younger.
"No problem! Mind if I sit next to you?" The girl asks, holding up her lunch box.
"Oh, sure!" I reply. She sits down, brushing her hair behind her ears.
"So what's your name? I'm Angelica Schuyler." The girl named Angelica asked.
"Oh, I'm John. John Laurens✨" I say, doing a little hair flip. Gotta put the fruityness in there.
"And I'm Charles Lee!" Charlie pops up from the left of me.
"Nice to meet both of you. So, what's for hot lunch today?" Angelica asked.
"Sloppy joes, fruit, and chips. There were beans too, but I didn't trust those beans." I chuckled.
"I thought your dad usually packed you a lunch, John, why didn't he today?" Charlie inquired.
"Since it's Alexander's first day of kindergarten my dad forgot to pack me a lunch because he had to pack an extra." I recalled what my dad said this morning when he realized he forgot.
"Oh, do you have a little brother, John?" Angelica chimed in.
"I have two actually, Alexander and Lafayette. I'm older then them both." I respond.
"Awesome! I have two younger sisters, Eliza and Peggy!" Angelica exclaims, smiling the same way she did when she saw my curly hair.
"That's cool! Do they go to school here?" I ask.
"Only Eliza does. Peggy's too young. She's 4. Eliza's in kindergarten." Angelica explains.
"Same with my brothers! Except Lafayette is 2 and Alexander is 4 yet still going to school. Apparently they started him early because he's smart." I sighed at my brother's nerdiness.
