Quackity was awakened by the quiet voices which broke through his walls into his room. It had been only a quiet conversation that had died down after some time, but still, he had not dared to leave his room until an hour later and had crept across the wooden floor with bare feet.
To be honest, he had expected everything. It had been a guess that the two had disappeared again or robbed his library. Instead, as he crept around the corner, the peaceful picture before his eyes froze him in place.
The faces of the two were turned away from Quackity, which made it easier for him to watch them sleep. In a heap of blankets, arms and hair, they were entwined with each other. Karl's face was half-hidden under Sapnap's black strands. As he was overcome with the need to wipe the strands from the others' faces, his wings fluttered open excitedly at the mere idea. As the soft golden wings tickled the skin on his back, he realized how strange it must look watching the two.
Shaking his head, he walked past the sofa and strode around the counter into his kitchen. That morning, he was feeling particularly down and craved a wake-up-shaking coffee more than a soothing tea. As the bubbling stove and the tart smell of coffee filled the house, Quackity slowly felt more awake. While he had fallen asleep the previous night, he had had to build a sparsely furnished nest to do so. Plus, his dreams had been saturated with the two strangers on his sofa and storms and lightning, so he didn't know how well-rested he really was.
The storm had disappeared since morning but had left the rain behind. Sporadically there were small gentle downpours that left the sky cloudy and sad.
Just as Quackity poured his coffee into his bright yellow mug, his attention was drawn to the movements at the other end of the room. On shaky legs, Karl struggled to the counter and the duck hybrid could have sworn at that moment that he could foresee the future. Within seconds, he set his mug down on the counter, paying no attention to spilling possible coffee, and ran around the kitchen corner.
He kept eye contact with Karl while his legs collapsed under his weight. Without screaming, merely with widened eyes, he headed for the hard wooden floor. To catch the brown-haired man in time, Quackity had half thrown himself on the floor and had crashed with him through the weight of the other.
Silently, the two lay on the floor. Their fall had set off a loud bang, and while Karl's eyes burned a hole in Quackity's face, he avoided the gaze with his lips pressed together. The avian looked over to the sofa where the previously sleeping Sapnap had now jumped up, a blanket still wrapped around his right leg. The black-haired one with his completely disheveled hair, looked over at them in alarm, ready for a fight.
Then he realized that no danger had come from the loud bang, but Quackity and Karl were on the floor. With a long-drawn-out yawn, Sapnap stumbled off the sofa, kicking the blanket off his leg. Standing in front of Karl and Quackity, he looked over at them, amused but also tired. Quackity tried, but couldn't suppress the rising blush on his face. Karl, still half lying on him, raised his head and grinned broadly at Sapnap.
"Hi Sap!" the brown-haired man said, and Quackity immediately noticed the freckles on Karl's cheeks that were accentuated as he grinned.
Sapnap didn't seem as mesmerized by Karl's smile as Quackity, squatting down to offer Karl a hand.
"Could you please not try to romance our host on the first morning?", Karl laughed as he was pulled to his feet by Sapnap.
A soft smile tugged at the corners of Sapnap's mouth as soon as Karl placed a kiss on his cheek. Quackity couldn't help but look away immediately as if the sight would burn him, and instead stood up with a bowed head.
"Sorry, I was still a little wobbly on my feet. He saved me from an awkward fall," Karl explained to Sapnap, who then hummed knowingly.
Quackity ignored their whispering as he straightened his clothes and nervously ran a hand through his black hair several times. Carefully, he placed a hand on Karl's upper arm, who immediately turned to the avian. Surprised that he had attracted attention so quickly with that small touch, Quackity had to clear his throat.
