The first night in Santa Carla had been a plain one.
No plans had been set in for anything, really. Besides Lucy and Y/N's mother preparing dinner, and Y/N herself catching up with Michael and Sam. She was shocked to find that Grandpa Emerson wasn't there, as apparently he was at his girlfriend's house.
"Wait... your grandpa has a girlfriend?" Y/N had asked, her face full of surprise as she bit into a carrot,
Sam nodded, "Yeah... of course! Old men can still be in the game too, Y/N!"
It was nice... catching up with everyone. Especially being that it was practically her second family, and that the fact they seemed to have plenty to tell her and her mom about.
Y/N subconsciously wished she could talk about her life. She wished it was more entertaining like Sam and Michael's life, as hers was just filled with depressing stories of her being in a fetal position in bed, crying over the so called people she called her "friends."
She had a feeling that's why her mom was so keen on her leaving for the summer. Y/N's depression & anxiety had gotten so awful at one point, she didn't leave the bed for almost a whole week. She didn't even leave her bedroom to go to the bathroom... which of course lead to a hospital trip for a bladder infection.
Sure, it all sounded sad. But Y/N had grown accustomed to the feeling of not fitting in with her popular friends, always feeling the need to pressure herself into making terrible choices just for a few minutes of validation from those same people.
Sam had never made her feel like she had to be anyone else other than herself to be his friend. He had always loved her just for the way she was. And, besides Sam... she had only friend like that.
Tatum.
But, Y/N didn't like to think about her that much.
As the night went on, Sam and Y/N laughed as they realized they had actually both been correct. A little bit after dinner, their mothers were sitting on the couch, wine remaining in their hands as they cackled loudly about their days from high school.
The two had met in elementary school, and they had always been friends... but they got really close in middle school. From that point on, the two best friends promised each other that they would be best friends forever, and no matter what... they would raise their kids together.
It was pretty obvious that they somehow managed to keep that promise.
When bedtime came, Y/N only found out then that she would be sharing Sam's room with him all summer. She didn't mind, but deep down, she knew at one point she would want her own private space. But, she would worry about that when the time came.
She took a shower awkwardly, as she realized she was such in a rush to go to bed that she had forgotten to actually get her bath stuff out of her bags. And on top of that, she was forced to have the even more awkward interaction of asking Sam to go into her luggage and find a pair of underwear, as she had forgotten to get some out.
When he passed it between the cracks of the bathroom door, he of course had throw her some snarky comment,
"I really like the color on those, Y/N! And... the unicorns, too!"
"Piss off, Sam!"
When Y/N finally climbed into the other bed, she questioned why there actually was another bed in Sam's room.
"Oh... my best friends stay over a lot... my mom just thought it would be more convenient than having to blow up an air mattress every night." he informed her, a comic book in hand, "Which reminds me... you're probably meeting those assholes, tomorrow."
