Shorter chapter this time
"What are you fifteen, Lucius?"
"Oh Severus, don't be so down. It'll be fun and give me a chance to learn more about Miss Kenner."
Severus' eyes shifted to mine, a flash of warning went through them. I couldn't help the feeling of comfort that yet again came over me in his presence. People say he's cold, but he cares so much. He just doesn't show it. Why would he, everybody just assumes everything about him. I had always found myself going to him in my times of trouble. Of course, everyone else thought I was crazy for it, but everyone sees him the way I do.
"Sophia"
My mind snapped back to the present, "hm?"
"I asked how you liked Hogwarts to Ilvermorny."
"Ah yes, I find Hogwart to be more advanced than Ilvermorny. Don't get me wrong, they teach at a faster pace but it never settles in the same way. It's definitely homier here."
"I'm glad you feel that way, though I can't say that grump over here contributed to that," Mr Malfoy said chuckling.
"I'll have you know I was very welcoming."
"Right, because handing her a timetable and teller her not to lose house points is welcoming."
I burst out laughing at Mr Malfoy's observation of Professor Snape. My laughter caused the man in question's eyes to narrow in my direction and then to his accusers. Malfoy seemed to be struggling to contain his own laughter. Eventually, our laughter died down, but the pain in my cheeks and side took longer to shake off.
We sit in compatible silence for a few minutes. Both men sipping their drinks, mine still on the table in front of me. No one said anything. No one felt the need to. It felt good. Safe. My eyes drifted shut, I could feel my eyelids getting heavier. Lifting them towards the clock, I noticed it read 11:28. Almost as if on cue, a howl came from outside. I jumped a little at the sound, effectively drawing the attention of my company.
"Just those nasty werewolves. I'm a bit surprised that the ministry hasn't done something about them."
"And what would the ministry do? They are creatures who have a bad name, given to them by one evil werewolf himself."
"They created that name for themselves."
"I happen to disagree." I could feel myself getting agitated, but I refused to let it show any further. I'd have to be up early the next morning, so I took my chance to take my leave. "I really must be going, it's late and I have an early morning."
I stood and gave a curt nod to Mr Malfoy and Professor Snape. Turning on my heel, I headed for the door. I made it through the doorway and into the hall when I heard footsteps coming up behind me.
"Miss Kenner, are you alright?"
I stopped and stood still, before turning and facing my professor. He didn't outwardly look concerned and anyone who didn't know him would assume he didn't care. Yet I could notice his stance. Protective.
"I'm fine. I really do have an early morning, you know that."
"I do."
I gave him a small smile and continued making my way down the hallway. Instead of heading towards the Slytherin dorms, I went to the Ravenclaw dorms instead. Coming face to face with the eagle door knocker, I came to the realization that I didn't know the password. Resigning myself to waiting I sat down next to the doors and waited till someone would let me in.
I didn't have to wait long, a group of younger girls opened the doors and let me in with them. I marched my way straight up to Ally's dorm. Without hesitation, I opened her door to find her alone on her bed, with what looked like DADA homework. Her head shot up at the intrusion.
"What are you doing here? How the hell did you get in?"
"Well I'm here to spend the night and I sat outside till someone let me in."
Her eyes nearly bulged out of her head hearing that. "They let you in! You're not allowed in here. If Professor Flitwick finds out, we'll lose house points."
"Oh relax, I'll use the passages if he does a sweep. Not to mention I'm pretty sure Snape will not question my whereabouts," I said walking over to her bed.
She laughed, "What's it like to have him wrapped around your finger?"
"Ugh he is not. We just have a level of respect."
"You seem to be the only student he respects. I'm serious!" She claims defensively at my outraged look.
"Whatever"
We sat in silence for a few minutes before Ally looked at me with worry in her eyes. "What if he isn't ok?"
I immediately felt the weight of her worry. I knew mine was just as intense. That thought had been with me since we parted ways at dinner. All the what-ifs. What if Jack loses his mind? What if the wolfsbane doesn't work? What if Lupin crosses paths with him? What if he gets hurt and we aren't there to help him? It had all run through my head, over and over again.
"He will be. Everything will be fine."

Early hours of the morning, I was startled awake by a light in the room. Glancing over I noticed Ally was still asleep. Looking back over to the source of light, I realized it was Kaite's patronus in the room. The bozori was standing there looking at me look at it. I tapped Ally and she shifted. I tapped her again and she woke up.
"We'll be there in a few minutes," I told it. Immediately it disappeared.
Ally and I began getting ourselves ready. We collected everything we needed and headed out of her dorm room. No one was in the common room, making it an easy escape. We marched ourselves down to the infirmary, to find Jack laid out on a bed with Katie next to him. Madam Pomfrey was coming back out from her office, completely ignoring our presence. I walked over to Jack, dragging Ally with me.
We both let out a relieved breath of air looking over our friend. Nothing to serious, just a few scratches and scrapes. I moved over to the other side to let Ally and Katie do what they do. Madam Pomfrey cast a small smile in my direction before heading off. Jack shifted his face in my direction, his hand came up to grasp mine. The same way it always did after a full moon. I gave him another once over and noticed a bite mark on the juncture of his shoulder. Already healed. But definitely new. Something that could be easily overlooked. My eyes met his again, and he knew I had noticed. I didn't say anything out loud, but I had read enough on werewolves recently to know he had been claimed into a pack.
Lupin's pack.
"How was it out there?"
"It was an adjustment, didn't really know how to focus my time. But it was ok and I think I look great. Madam Pomfrey said nothing will really scar, so that's a disappointment but other than that I am good."
"Oh that's great news," Ally said while launching herself at Jack. He winced and tapped her back. It was a solid minute before she actually drew herself off of him. The sun had risen and daylight started to pour through the windows. Adding more light to the candle-lit room.
Madam Pomfrey made her way back over to us. Only to inform us of the time and where we needed to be. We each hugged Jack and packed up our junk. When turning to leave, Jack grasped my hand again. I turned to him, in obvious confusion.
"You should see him."
"What?"
"The wolf doesn't like to be denied. And he did just that."
I nodded my head once in acknowledgment and made my way out of the infirmary after my friends. Jack's words on repeat in my head.
