Just Leo and I
Nick and Leo grinned at me knowingly when I approached them during lunch break. After making my decision on the visit to Damien's during the free period, I'd pretty much been lounging about doing nothing. A part of me could not believe I was going through with this but I had to keep my grades up. No matter the circumstance, I just had to.
That's why, when the bell rang for lunch, I ended up looking all over the school for the two friends of the big buffoon. It never crossed my mind that they'd be out on campus, which is exactly where I found them in the end.
The school campus had a claim over the word 'beauty' in its own right. Damien had mentioned yesterday during his grand tour that the Environmental Club had taken a real effort into going all out 'eco' in almost every aspect. When one set foot out of the high school building, a rainbow of colors would be the first thing to see as flowers upon flowers were planted along the grass outlining the sidewalk. There were several trees providing shade and a good sit-out spot for students as well. It was at one such spot where Leo and Nick were relaxing.
They were both plopped under a tree, and when they saw me walking dreadfully slow towards them, they predicted what it was about.
"Ah, here she comes. It's Damien's bride," Leo teased.
I shot a glare at him and muttered quietly, "I'm coming with you guys after school."
They both looked at each other, exchanging a secret glance. Then Nick took the liberty of asking, "Why?"
"Because I have to do this stupid History project with Damien. And the teacher says I don't have a choice."
I hated admitting myself to Leo's prediction. He had such an idiotic expression that I just wanted to slap off his face right now. "I knew this was going to happen" was stamped across his forehead as he grinned at me knowingly.
"Ah, I pity you," he said.
Not saying a word, I sat down on the grass and joined the two for the break. I just wanted to get this day over with and that would mean accepting the fact that I'd have to put up with Damien today as well.
The rest of the school day seemed to whiz by, much to my dismay. And soon, the hour was upon me. When the final bell signalling the end of the day rang, I slowly stood up from my seat and packed my bag before joining the two others in the front of the room.
Nick had a mischievous smile on his lips as he eyed Leo and me. He was walking behind us, for a reason I didn't know and didn't care to ask about while Leo stayed by my side. I was waiting for the teasing to start, the irritating prodding. But both of them stayed quiet till we made it out of the busy hallway and out to the front of the school campus.
I followed Leo, having no real idea of where we were going but Nick from behind us cleared his throat. "So I guess I'll be seeing you two tomorrow."
"Hold on," I said, turning around to catch Nick by the sleeve before he could make his escape. "Where are you off to mister?"
"To see Amy of course," he said, blinking innocently.
"So I'm going with Leo?" I asked, not even putting an attempt to conceal the disgust in my voice. Nick grinned and nodded as I made a face but Leo slightly nudged me on the hip before whispering into my ear, "Yep, it's just you and I Makayla."
"Stop doing that!" I yelled, swatting him away. Laughing, Leo tugged my hand and beckoned towards the school bus.
"We don't want to be late."
I grunted and let him pull me away from Nick who laughed heartily at the sight. I was letting go of my one lifesaver in this place.
Oh joy.
"So are you looking forward to seeing Damien again?" Leo asked as we moved down the bus. I scooted into the window seat and he sat by me. The seats were rather tight but due to the fact that both of us were quite lean, we didn't have much difficulty in keeping a physical distance.
"Not as much as I am in spending time with you," I retorted.
Leo grinned, that annoying smirk that I'd found that most guys in this planet would flash at a girl just to anger her.
"Remind me again why you hate me so much."
"You're cocky. And you're a guy which adds more to the cockiness," I pointed out.
The bus lurched to life, causing me to graze shoulders with him a little. Goosebumps ran up my arm as I glared into those ocean blue depths of his eyes.
"Most women love that about me," he teased, still smiling.
"Well, you clearly haven't met the right girl," I replied, trying so hard not to break eye contact with him though I felt this blush rise up my cheek.
Leo noticed but didn't say anything. Instead, he smiled at me then looked to the front of the bus. I sighed in relief.
Whether or not I liked to admit it, there was something about him that threw me off. Not only was he attractive in a mysterious kind of way but every single time he leaned forward and spoke into my ear had me somewhat on edge, in a good way. Was he like this with all girls? Does he even have a girlfriend?
The rest of the ride went quietly. I didn't say anything, and neither did he. Our arms occasionally brushed but neither of us withdrew from the touch. Besides, I didn't really mind...I think.
Before I knew it, the bus skidded to a stop and Leo got up.
"We're here."
Well that was quick. We might as well have walked.
"If he lives so close to the school, we could have just taken a walk here you know," I said. Leo smiled and waited for me to hop down the bus before we continued in a rather normal pace down the street.
"I guessed you would have hated to considering how much you hate me."
I looked down, feeling slightly ashamed. "I don't hate you."
"You sure act like you do," Leo muttered, slipping his hands into his pockets. "With the dramatic goodbye from Nick and all that, and of course, your little outburst in History class."
Whether I liked to admit it or not, I did feel rather guilty. Looking up at Leo, I whispered apologetically, "I'm sorry."
He mustn't have heard me because he didn't say anything, continuing to walk on. So, I ended up tugging lightly on his hand. Looking down, those now unsettled blue waters met mine curiously.
"I said I'm sorry."
No emotion dared to reveal itself in Leo's eyes but he held my gaze for a good minute or two before shrugging and looking away. "It's fine." Coughing, he took a sideways turn and said, "We're here."
My eyes scanned Damien's house in interest. It looked identical to mine, if not the exact same. Did he live in the same neighborhood as me? Oh dear, I hope not.
Leo let go of my hand which I hadn't noticed I'd still been holding onto before making his way up the stairs and knocking on the front door.
"Damien! It's us!"
Within the next fraction of a second, the door opened wide and in front of us stood a perfectly healthy Damien with a wide grin on his face. "Well hello there."
