"Sounds like you sure had a nice night" Killua complains, rubbing his forehead, leaning on the counter in front of the toaster while waiting for his waffle to pop up. "I hardly got any sleep last night, God..."

You blush. So it wasn't a dream?  You thought it was since you woke up in a cold bed, all alone. You slumped in your seat. You were not in the mood for Killua's shit, you never were in the mornings, but especially this morning. Especially after giving up all your pride last night.

It didn't even take much for him you have you wrapped around his finger, all it would take is just for him to be there. Far below the bare minimum. No matter how hard you tried to resist, it felt almost impossible to resist him. Like all the pain and tears he had caused before he decided to show up again out of the blue had just disappeared, like they never existed in the first place.

You hated yourself so much after you had submitted to him once again, like a lost puppy, but it felt so good, so comfortable, no matter how many times you'd try to convince yourself that it would be different this time. But they were just excuses to keep treating yourself like this, feeling so worthless without him- when you really felt even more worthless when you were with him.

"Shut it, Killua" You mumble, ready to absolutely destroy something. You checked your phone for the 3rd time in the past 2 minutes, waiting for Jess' response.

"Geez, you're in a bad mood. He leave you unfinished?"

You glare up from your phone at Killua with a look that could literally kill, squinting daggers into his eyes. One of the one times that he was actually, genuinely scared of someone, was when Jess had left you yet again, for "work".

The waffle pops up.

You band your head against the table.

"Ugh, I've had enough of this! Doesn't Jess have one little ounce of sympathy? What kind of jackass just screws his girlfriend after disappearing for 2 days just to leave again?"

Killua nibbled on his waffle as he watched your helpless pitty boil into anger.

"Hey that's the first time I think I've ever heard you insult him, you're finally learning you don't have to keep doing this to yourself."

"Doing what?" You mumble, your head buried in your arms

Killua sighs, beginning to walk away. He knew you were smart, unless it came to Jess and common sense.

"Convincing yourself that he'll stay. I gotta go to class now, see ya y/n" Killua says, pulling on a jacket and swinging his bag over his left shoulder, leaving promptly.

You watch him leave and pick your phone up, you open Instagram and the first post was your sister and her fiance, Ray, at the beach, just right after the engagement. You can't help but smile sadly.

Killua's right, I can't keep doing this to myself...

It was true that you and Jess were still dating, but it almost felt like you were cheating on Kurapika. For some reason, cheating on Jess didn't bother you nearly as much as you thought, as compared to cheating on Kurapika with Jess.

The next month consisted of a carbon copy of each day. It was just like a hazy dream. He came, he came, and then he left. Like a toy, you were played with.

1 month later - March

For the past month, you and Kurapika would be together almost every day. He basically moved in, since some nights he would sleep over since it was too late to walk home, and he just wanted to make sure you were okay. (He slept in Killua's room because Killua made him) Every night he slept over, it made you wish it was already just morning to see his face and hear his voice.

On the days he did stay over, you guys would go out for coffee and go on walks. And if it was raining, you two would paint or read. It was always a good day if he was in it.

You one day curiously asked him about his job again, curious as to how he hasn't been fired yet since he was always at your place. He decided it was time to finally tell you.

He told you that when he was younger, his whole family was murdered by a gang while he was in a different state looking for different doctors and cures for his friend who was blind. And when he returned, he found them all dead. You also found out that Kurapika grew up in an unsafe town, which was why the police had told him a gang had done it. And ever since then, he took on a job as a solo detective.

Luckily, just 2 years ago he was able to solve his lifelong mystery and had taken them to court in South Carolina. His ex-girlfriend's father was a lawyer, and a very respected and well-known one represented Kurapika and he eventually won the case, taking the gang to jail and finally avenging his family.

Looking back, it made a bit more sense. His mannerisms, at least. How caring and protective he seemed like he was afraid of losing...
