Squidward began to like his job, customers smiled at him, his coworkers appreciated him, and most of all, Squidward did not feel alone anymore. Squidward and Jim had become the closest friends could get and Squidward was finally happy. He was still living paycheck to paycheck because his mother had grown older and was unable to work, but he was at least living in a great city and everything seemed to be getting better. Everything then got dramatically worse. Jim had gotten fired for possesion and only weeks later, he was found dead, having overdosed on heroin. Squidward's meaningful life had suddenly fallen down a dark well. Squidward had known better than to slip into drugs, but could not help it and turned to alcohol. He began to loathe himself and everyone around him. He thought things could not get any worse. But, like all stories go, they did, at least for Squidward. One day, a lone sponge rolled into town, he moved in next door to Squidward, into a pineapple that had just fallen from the sky. Squidward knew this was insane, who could live in a pineapple? He thought to keep his distance from his new neighbor, but the sponge would not ignore a new friend. The sponge introduced himself as Spongebob. Squidward, while intoxicated, introduced himself and told him about the opening at the Krusty Krab. Spongebob rushed over there faster than a grease pig on roller skates. Krabs was skeptical, but after he was able to defend the restaurant from waves upon waves of anchovies, he had the job. Squidward was not too happy about this, but could deal with it for his aging mother.
