new years was always a sensitive topic for both amelia and freddy. the two of them made a promise to each other, long ago, that no matter what happened they'd always be together. and which each passing year, it was reminder they never fulfilled that promise.
a year ago, neither of them ever imagined spending the new year together again. but they were. they didn't attend the party together, as it was for the cast, but the sentiment was still there.
"you have to talk to him," amelia's best friend, timothee chalamet, said over the phone. "come on, lia."
amelia rolled her eyes but bid her friend goodbye as she ended the call. taking a deep breath, she scanned the room, trying to find freddy. last she saw him was when they exited their shared car to get to the venue. it seemed, she didn't have to do much to get his attention because his eyes were already on her.
the two seemed to have a physic connection as freddy made his way over to her, grabbing two glasses of the alcohol being served. he handed her the other glass when he reach her side.
"freddy..."
"do you know what your dad told me when they visited? he said that you were incredibly hurt when we broke up. that you were inconsolable," amelia went to open her mouth but freddy added, "and then he said it must have hurt for you, as well, son."
amelia closed her mouth and didn't reply. what were you supposed to say in a situation like this? timothee had insisted on them talking but right now, on the spot, she had no idea what to talk about. what else was there to say?
"i'm sorry about what i said. during the dinner," freddy eventually said when the silence was all too much.
"are you?"
"what?"
"are you actually sorry or do you just want to sweep this under the rug?"
"sweep this under the rug?"
"yeah."
"sweep this under the rug?"
"you repeating it won't change what i said, freddy."
"i'm not the one who sweeps things under the rug, amelia."
"excuse me?"
sensing a fight was about to break out, freddy sighed and put his hands up in the air. "i don't want to fight. i didn't... i didn't come here to fight."
"why did you come here?"
"be more specific about here."
"you're the one who first mentioned 'here' so, you answer that."
freddy massages the bridge of his nose as he takes a deep breath. it seemed he was trying to collect his thoughts and manage his emotions. but when he opened his eyes and made eye contact with amelia, everything seemed to wash away.
it was as if they were no longer in a party with the entire cast and crew. it wasn't as if they've been apart for decades. it wasn't as if they were in war.
it was just them.
it was peaceful.
not thinking, amelia placed her hands on freddy's face and placed her lips on his.
