"And we broke everything that was right; We both enjoyed a good fight. And we sewed all the holes we had to breathe, to make the other one leave."
They stood quietly in the middle of the garden, both looking away in fear, in regret, in disappointment. They hadn't seen each other in a long time, and the last time they were this close, things didn't end well. Promises were broken. Hurtful words were exchanged between them, which they both regretted saying and knew they couldn't take back. She was left in the middle of the road, crying, as she watched him walk away. They were gradually drifting away, only to resurface like strangers.
Now, between the silence and anxiety growing between them, they couldn't look at each other. The voice that had once made their hearts fluttering and their pulses racing in breathless passion, was now tearing, crushing their hearts.
She was the first one who bravely looked at him, noticing him, faced down on the ground, eyebrows furrowed deeply, sadness and pain in his eyes. She had no idea how they ended up drifting apart when she was so certain they were glued together.
It's hard to get to him now. He rebuilt a wall around himself, the same one he had torn down for her months before, just to let her in. He gave everything he had. He opened himself to feel. She made him believe he's capable of feeling. So he let it all out, only to end up being hurt so badly the walls had to be doubled up. All she could see in his eyes right now was pain and anger. Oh, how she missed his smiles and the way he gazed at her as if she were the only one in the world, lost in his loving stare, but now he couldn't even look at her, let alone move his attention towards her. She would give anything just to see him smiling at her again, but his smile wasn't there anymore. And it's all her fault.
He couldn't believe he hadn't noticed it sooner. There were patterns, sure, but he ignored them all. In his heart, it has always been her, but in the end, he wasn't sure if it was really him who had her heart. Then he realized it wasn't his to take.
It's difficult to look at her. He attempted to keep rationality apart from his emotions, just like what he's used to: before everything that happened, before meeting her, but he was anything but logical right now. She took it away from him, telling him that having little emotion was a good thing. It was wild and courageous; free and overwhelming; never little, but he let himself experience every inch of happiness and love; anguish and disappointment. It was all or nothing. He was feeling everything and nothing at the same time, and it was excruciatingly painful. When he looked at her, looking at him just as what he had been hoping to see all those times, exactly as he had been when they were together, staring at her as if she was the air he breathed, warmth in winter, shade in the sun. He wished he could feel all of those emotions again, but all he could see now was her mistake. She was too late.
They were going around in circles. They're back at the starting line and both knew how they would go on, either it's with or without each other. No one's too sure anymore. All they knew was that one still wanted to hang on, but the other was sick of being the second.
