Chapter one

I'm just like everyone else... Except my mother is dead and my dad is in prison for murder and theft. My name is Maria, Maria Treger, 16 years old. I am currently living on my Aunt Myra's horse farm in London England. I've lived there since I was two, doing chores, taking care of the horses. I don't really have any friends, except this boy, who is the farier's son and treats my aunts horses. But when I'm not at school getting pestered by spit balls and pushed into lockers, I enjoy the company of the old nag of a horse, Nutmeg. She can't do much, but she has a decent jump, and that's what I've always wanted to do. I've always dreamed of competing in the British Masters' four star Grand Prix.

I mean, my life has been ok, but i HATE school, like, I would drop out if I could, but unfortunately Aunt Myra won't let me. Aunt Myra has been giving me my jumping lessons, which I wish I could do all the time.

"Mariiiiiia!" Aunt Myra called "Dinnnnnner!"

"Coming!" I yelled out. I rushed down stairs to find a plate of potatoes and salmon. My expression was probably made out of complete disgust, because Aunt Myra started giggling.

"I know it's not your favourite, but you need nutrients."

"...fine."

"Tell you what. After diner, we'll go to the horse auction house."

My face instantly lit up and totally forgot about the nasty salmon I was eating.
