We walked over to a table, trying not to look scared and intimidated by the occasional looks we received from other students. The table was occupied by Alex, the new girl.
She was dressed in a red over sized hoody, blue denim pants and a pair of Reebok shoes. She was only a week old in the school and wasn't much of a talker. She always wore hoody and didn't really associate with anyone.
We sat across her after collecting our lunch from the counter. She was only nibbling on an apple half-halfheartedly while reading a novel and didn't seem to mind us. I couldn't eat much. I couldn't believe I was this scared. I knew I used to have my own fair share of bullies in the past but that couldn't continue forever. I couldn't let anyone push me around, especially not Caleb.
" I heard you were getting your face smashed in today".
That was the first time she had spoken to me since she came.
"What did you do to get into such a mess?" She continued, not raising her head from the novel she was reading.
"None of your business, I replied, a bit annoyed at the intrusion.
"You think I care?" She scoffed."I'm just not in the mood to see someone's face get pummeled today".
Man she was infuriating. Noah had been acting a bit restless since we came in and had hardly said a word. I figured he was just scared but then i caught him stealing glances at... Alex?
"Then I suggest you lea...",
"Hey, punk!"
A chill went down my spine. He's here. Everyone backed up and gave way for Caleb and his crew to pass. He walked towards me, his friends circling round the table and looking at me menacingly.
"You ready to die, punk?", he said, edging closer.
"Leave me alone Caleb, I don't want to fight you." I replied.
He laughed. "You scared?" He threw my bag on the floor and grabbed my shirt.
"LEAVE HIM ALONE!"
Noah!? What the hell is he thinking trying to get involved? They were ohs and ahs from the students as Noah stood up. He was a weakling as far as anyone was concerned. But he seemed determined to help me. He had always been picked on by Caleb, so was he trying to take a stand for me?
Caleb stopped momentarily, a bit surprised by Noah. Then he laughed and punched me hard in my midsection. Pain flared up in my abdomen as I clutched my stomach.
"Or what?" he replied Noah before landing another one, and another one and another one. My vision tunneled and I wheezed in pain as the assault continued.
"PLEASE STOP!", Noah continued, his body trembling. "...OR I'LL REPORT YOU TO THE PRINCIPAL!", He threatened.
The cafeteria became silent. No one had ever dared threaten Caleb before and coming from Noah, it was an insult.
And as if on signal, the rest of the gang came upon Noah, beating and kicking him.
That'll teach you never to threaten me ever again!" he spat. He had let go of me and was obviously enjoying watching Noah get beaten up.
No this was too much. Beating me up is one thing but no one messes with my friends. I was sad and at the brink of tears while watching Noah get rough handled then something hit me. What did Mr. Leo say about trouble?
"Stor..", I was thinking when I became filled with rage and my vision turned red. The air suddenly turned static and smelled ozone. I could feel the bruises fading and pain I felt leaving, replaced by a sensation I had only felt once- Power. I could feel electricity coursing through my body and it felt good.I turned my attention towards Caleb and grabbed him by the shirt.
"Leave my friend alone!", I said just as I punched Caleb on the face. The impact threw him into the air as he fell unceremoniously onto a table, knocking him out.
Everyone was shell shocked. His gang members were mortified and tension filled the air. Then they came at me with full force, but for some reason they were... slower. I wasn't scared and I knew what to do. Anthony came first and he was down in a second. Then Zach. He tried to grab me but I countered and judo flipped him. He fell hard and didn't stand up. The rest took to their heels and fled.
And as if on cue, I felt it leave me and I stood there drained and spent. I managed to reach Noah and helped him get up. I was receiving stares from everyone. They were mostly surprised but nonetheless, impressed.
"Dude, where the hell did you learn to fight like that?" Noah asked.
"Just something I picked up on TV" I replied as we walked out of the cafeteria just as the bell rung.
